Charlton boss Nathan Jones has named a young side today and they've been under the cosh from the beginning.

Destiny Udogie is causing some trouble down the flanks and they've been forced to set up camp in their own third.

Charlton have, at least, looked strong in the air. They'll need to try and break forward if they want to test Tottenham, though.

Joe Willock was unlucky, it's a decent strike.

He'll be full of confidence after scoring that goal against Liverpool at the weekend.

Joe Willock has been heavily involved for Newcastle and he has another chance. He rolls the ball from right foot to left and tries his luck from the edge of the penalty area, only to shoot well over the bar.

Charlton's Collins Sichenje went down following a collision and looks to be in some pain. It seems like it might have hurt his knee.

He has managed to get back to his feet and will continue, although he looks to be in discomfort.

It has been all Newcastle and Joe Willock has another shooting chance after being set up by Nick Woltemade, but West Brom have enough bodies back and are able to scramble the ball to safety.

The Newcastle corner is aimed for Nick Woltemade at the back post, and he wins another one.

Jacob Murphy takes a deep corner, but West Brom are able to clear their lines.

Around 2,000 West Brom supporters have made the trip to St James' Park on a Wednesday night. They are making themselves heard up in the gods.

An early chance for Newcastle as Joe Willock races on to a ball forwards, but the angle was always going to be too tight and he can only send it behind, but does earn the corner.

Away we go in our first three matches of the night - Bradford v Burnley, Newcastle v West Brom and Tottenham v Charlton.

Preston v Everton begins in 15 minutes.

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle does not have to look too far into the history books for inspiration as he prepares to take charge of his first Carabao Cup tie.

An estimated 300,000 supporters packed out city-centre streets and the Town Moor just 18 months ago to celebrate the Magpies ending a long wait for silverware by winning the competition.

"They tried to convince me with that footage," he joked of negotiations with the club's hierarchy before he took charge. "It was not needed."

Newcastle certainly had a strong record in the EFL Cup under predecessor Eddie Howe, reaching at least the semi-finals in three of the past four seasons.

"It's a big competition in the history of the club," said Jaissle.

West Bromwich Albion

West Brom boss James Morrison speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm really excited for this game, we can impose ourselves really well. It will be a good test to see where we are. Our squad is going to be tested this week. I would have liked it in a couple of weeks but we'll be able to deal with it."

On his young squad: "It's a great game to play in, the lads are excited, I'm excited. I know last year against Bradford it was 51,000 so we are aware of this. I played here a number of times and it's a great place to play football."

David Moyes began his managerial career at Preston, spending four years there, helping the club out of the third tier in 1999-2000.

He nearly took them into the Premier League, only to lose in the play-offs in 2000-01, 3-0 in the final to Bolton.

Moyes began his first spell at Everton in 2002 and this is his first game back at Deepdale as an opposition manager since his time in charge there.

Newcastle have signed Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzales. Podcaster Amos Murphy has been giving the City perspective on the deal, telling Newcastle fans what they can expect from the Spaniard: “When you look at what he can offer, he’s 24-years-old, I think he turns 25 during the current season, if it goes well and if I’m to predict, I think it will go well for him because he will get those extra minutes and he will start to look a little bit more settled, that could be a great signing for the next five years.”

He really trains hard, he is really committed. Hopefully today he can score. He is contributing a lot of good things towards the team. We can count on him."

On having a good record in cup competitions: "It's a good omen, we can build on it. It's always a difficult one, this balance between rotation and trying to win. We're ambitious. First of all we want to make the first step, that's the most important thing today."

Everton simply must sign a recognised right-back before the window shuts. It has been a glaring problem for more than a year.

It is a weakness recognised by everyone at the club but either a prime target cannot be agreed upon or is out of reach.

Talented midfielder Merlin Rohl took on the job for the opening game against Crystal Palace, while Jake O'Brien and James Garner have also been pressed into service.

Time to finally make a decision and get one in. Maybe David Moyes will also look at adding another striker with questions still hanging over Beto and Thierno Barry.

The Championship side in tonight's all-London tie have enjoyed a perfect start to their season so far.

They have won both of their games in the league, beating relegated West Ham 2-1 at the weekend and Derby 2-1 in the match before, and got to this stage of the League Cup following a 3-1 win at League Two side Cheltenham in the first round.

They have opted not to start Tyreece Campbell - who scored in each of those three matches - tonight.
