Mark van Bommel's Belgium beat Roberto Mancini's Italy in their Nations League opener in Rome.
Former Netherlands midfielder Van Bommel was taking charge of the Red Devils for the first time, while Mancini was starting his second spell as Azzurri boss.
"We need to think positively and not keep banging on all the time about what has happened in the past," Mancini said when asked if Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup was still hanging over the nation.
"In any case we can't change what happened now," added Mancini, who also said that boos by the home fans in the crowd of almost 50,000 were "normal" and "part of the game".
Mancini was previously Italy coach between 2018 and 2023 and led them to victory at Euro 2020.
Paris St-Germain's Mika Godts scored his first Belgium goal, cutting inside two defenders in the box before firing in.
Benfica's Dodi Lukebakio then ran from his own half before blasting in their second goal from 25 yards.
Mancini brought on Sporting's Issa Doumbia and Nuremberg's Mohamed Ali Zoma for their international debuts late on.
The pair were team-mates for Serie C side AlbinoLeffe as recently as 2023-24.
