No one really cares about this game. It’s ridiculous after being away for so long that the players couldn’t just pack up and come home… Give a bronze medal to each national team association and forget playing the game.

The ultimate prize might now be out of reach but there is still a chance for this to end as a historic tournament for England.

OK, winning a third-place play-off for the first time might not be what fans were dreaming of when the World Cup began - but it would ensure this was England men's best finish at the tournament for 60 years.

Victory over France would mean only their 1966 triumph would rank above this year's efforts.

Two previous third-place play-offs at the World Cup have ended in defeat.

Sir Bobby Robson's side were beaten by hosts Italy in 1990, while Sir Gareth Southgate's men lost to Belgium in 2018.

When gold and silver are off the table, you might as well try to take the bronze.

The only Englishman who is happy England got knocked out is my dad, who has flown to Miami as he got a ticket for the bronze match not knowing who he would see! Find it quite ironic. At 74 years old just to be part of the World Cup!!

    Darren, Chelmsford

Tonight's game does matter because we need to show we really want to win things. Plus it's France, that's a great team to beat so let's back the country and see if we can play this one right for 90+ minutes. Come on England!

Around 7,000 tickets are still listed on Fifa's ticket sites for Saturday's World Cup bronze medal match between England and France.

As of Friday at 10:00 BST, the game in Miami (kick off 22:00 BST) has not yet sold out with 1,246 tickets on general sale listed at $865 (£657) and $1,125 (£855).

There are a further 5,864 tickets available on the official resale platform, with the cheapest being category three available at a face value of $455 (£346) plus Fifa's 15% fee.

However, there are many tickets in the higher-priced categories listed well below what they were purchased for.

A category one ticket with an original price of $1,125 (£855) has a hugely discounted price of $659 (£500).

He has to go, simple as that. He was brought in to win and he hasn’t. That in itself is disappointing, but the manner of the defeat is unforgivable. He did everything in that last half hour that he said he wouldn’t. Do the honourable thing and resign.

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel on the Three Lions' bronze final against France:

"Nobody wants to be in the game tomorrow, all four teams wanted to be in New York, but it's an official World Cup game and its a chance for the best finish in 60 years for England.

"Mentality is not something you switch on or off, so it's another moment to show we are made of what we showed in the tournament.

"There will be changes, I am not sure how many. We will then start to try and close the gap."

Tuchel deserves to stay. He got us to a semi final of a World Cup. But if he’s really the coach to take us to the next level, he’ll learn from that mistake. It was a big one. If not, it’s toodle pip Tuchel.

England boss Thomas Tuchel, asked if the country's changing opinion of him will impact his decision to stay on as manager:

"I would like to make my own picture, I think it's a strong statement, and be an advocate for half the nation for being against me.

"I can never change my thinking on whether I would like to carry on."

You can't criticise 'fearful patterns' throughout the tournament and then adopt it as a tactic. Especially not against a team with a fantastic comeback record. I only wish the consistency were better. Jude's goal against Croatia came at the end 30 passes, more of that please.

  10. Mexico and Norway games 'cost us more than we thought'published at 10:20 BST

    France v England (22:00 BST)

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel on whether his players ran out of steam amid a long World Cup campaign:

"I think if we don't even want to admit it, but I feel the Mexico game with ten men and altitude, the travelling, we lost a full night of sleep and the game in the heat against Norway cost us more than we thought.

"The players literally gave everything in every single match, the motivation was through the roof.

"I think Argentina built something over several years and of course have experience of overcoming these kind of moments and winning titles together.

    "Lot of reasons, yeah."

Once we set up shop in a low block, what was the point of leaving Harry Kane on? He didn’t have the energy to press, so why not have put someone more aggressive, and fresh, to win the ball back.

  12. Kane 'has to defend in deep block'published at 10:11 BST

    France v England (22:00 BST)

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel on Harry Kane playing a deep role in the Argentina game:

"We defended in a deep block, so that's what you do if you defend in a block.

"We were not active enough, we could not escape the block. If you defend in a block, team togetherness and mentality is translated in football terms to defend as a ten, as an eleven.

"If we are pushed into a deep block, then Harry has to defend in a deep block. That's what he did for moments in the first half. We do everything together as a team."

I don't really care that Tuchel didn't play Mainoo. He clearly rated him enough to bring him but hasn't seen enough in training. But he keeps saying "we couldn't do xyz". Most England fans just want him to try. It's irritating watching your team give up and lose playing scared.

  14. 'We became passive'published at 10:02 BST

    France v England (22:00 BST)

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel on his formation leading up to and after Gordon's opener:

"We played in a 4-4-2, Argentina played with a lot of momentum after our goal.

"They had a lot of offensive changes, a lot of offensive positions chasing the goal. We could not stop the crosses and we could not stop the runners into the box, so we decided to play a back five to have more width in the field, to be closer to the guys who cross.

"We couldn't turn the momentum over and we became passive. Argentina found another gear and found their flow.

"It was the first official match in defeat, we played in a semi-final against the reigning World Champions and against the best player in the world.

"We are not there yet, there is still a gap to close. This is what we will do tomorrow, we will not stop chasing, we will not stop challenging."

  15. 'I take responsibility'published at 09:56 BST

    France v England (22:00 BST)

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel when asked who takes responsibility for the semi-final loss:

    “I take responsibility.

"Listen, if it's easier, if someone takes the blame, I take the blame. It's no problem - this is the deal that you sign up for.

“I understand it, and you have every right to do so. But I will not engage in this kind of game because for me there is no one to blame.

"If you need someone to blame, I take the responsibility. I'm the head coach.

“We got a lot of problems in the 4-4-2. We couldn't solve the problems later in the other structure. We have to live with this. It's our pain. It's our pain, my pain and the players' pain. We feel the most pain of all. It is our scar that we carry now.

“It is a very painful defeat, and we have to live with this defeat, first and foremost. Not the critics, not the experts, not our family members who suffer as well with us and want only the best for us, but it's basically us.

“We will overcome it. We will use it. We will have a reaction, and that starts from tomorrow. We have a gap to close, and we are aware of that, and that's where the focus is.”

Tuchel’s squad selection, and refusal to play Mainoo, meant England would always struggle to keep possession against top opposition. His in-game tactics then eliminated any possibility. Yet he now complains that we didn’t keep possession better. It’s like giving a kid a triangle then complaining they’re not playing piano concertos.

  17. Tuchel has 'no regrets' over tacticspublished at 09:46 BST

    France v England (22:00 BST)

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel maintains he has “no regrets” over his tactical decisions:

“I view them in the same way, we were too passive.

“I don't regret my decisions, because I felt that we became too passive. I felt that the momentum switched in the match, and I tried to help my team. I tried to support.

“I took several decisions, trusting my instinct, my intuition, my experience, trusting my competitiveness. And I took the decision in order to help the team and get the result.

“We didn't get the result, so I take, of course, the responsibility for these decisions. But the decisions are made under stress; the decisions are made in-game. This is in-game live coaching.

“I would regret it if I didn't help. I would regret if we didn't react. But I have no regrets over the decision itself.”

England players saw their families and loved ones immediately after the semi-final defeat against Argentina in Atlanta and it is understood there was a definite sense in those moments that the way the team was set up after going ahead was a contributing factor in their downfall.

BBC Sport is aware of at least three senior players who have complained privately about the team's approach during the closing stages.

There is an acknowledgement that ceding ground on the pitch when defending a lead is a natural instinct for players.

But, equally, there is believed to be a consensus among certain players that Tuchel's tactical switches and substitutions exacerbated their defensive retreat.

Certain players believe the team should have had greater licence to press the ball during the closing stages in an effort to at least try and push Argentina away from their goal – even just to provide some respite for the defenders.

But instead, while some players recognised it as the team simply resorting to clearing their lines and regrouping their shape in defence – it was a tactic some didn't agree with.

There is certainly a sense from some players that they could have been bolder and braver in those closing stages.

One source said: "They went too deep too early."

Some of the consternation from players towards how England were instructed to finish the game certainly paints an interesting picture heading into the rest of Tuchel's reign.
