Tottenham finished 17th 12 months ago, but were never really in danger of relegation as then-boss Ange Postecoglou juggled an injury-hit squad with a focus on Europe.

However, they have endured a truly disastrous campaign this time around, once again not helped by a lengthy injury list.

Their season has encompassed three head coaches and multiple unwanted records, including losing six games in a row for the first time in their history and going on a 15-game winless run in the league.

Thomas Frank, who succeeded Postecoglou last June, was dismissed in February.

His replacement Igor Tudor's reign was a new nadir, with the club collecting just one Premier League point from a possible 15 before his 44-day tenure was brought to an end.

Roberto de Zerbi then took on the unenviable task of ending their tailspin.

Draws against Brighton and Leeds that bookended wins over Wolves and Aston Villa provided light at the end of the tunnel, and they are now on course to escape - unless there is a dramatic plot twist today.

  2. West Ham on the brinkpublished at 15:16 BST

Things look bleak for West Ham.

Three straight defeats have left Nuno Espirito Santo's side in 18th, two points from safety with a much worse goal difference that Tottenham ahead of them.

The Hammers must win or their 14-year stay in the Premier League will end this afternoon.

If they take three points they will give themselves a chance... but they still need Everton to win at Spurs.

Tottenham have had their chances. 1-0 up against Leeds at home and they let that slip and it was very nervy towards the end. The defeat to Chelsea, that loss was massive. At home they have been woeful, so you can imagine it being very nervy.

    .

Arriving at the London Stadium a little earlier you wouldn't really think that West Ham could be just a couple of hours away from being relegated.

The mood among the fans I came across wasn't downbeat, but perhaps more of acceptance. One supporter described this match as a "free hit", adding that to stay up would be a bonus, while another said he just wanted to see the Hammers win and that after that "what will be will be".

The West Ham fans know the odds are stacked against them so appear to in the main be here to enjoy a few drinks in the sun, while hoping for the best once the football gets under way.

Crystal Palace v Arsenal (16:00 BST)

    Alex Howell
BBC Sport Arsenal reporter at Selhurst Park

There's going to be a real party atmosphere inside the stadium later.

Arsenal are going to be celebrating winning their first title in 22 years by lifting the Premier League trophy, it's Oliver Glasner’s last match at Selhurst Park and both sides have European finals next week to look forward to too.

It's also the first time that Eberechi Eze has come back to Selhurst Park since he left for the Gunners.

He's a hero in south London after scoring the winner in the FA Cup for the Eagles last season and it's easy to forget that he's actually played for Palace in the league this season too.

    Spurs v Everton (16:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

No words from the Spurs hierarchy, such as CEO Vinai Venkatesham, in today's match programme as they seek the point against Everton that will keep them in the Premier League.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi is outspoken in his match notes saying: "There are days in your life when you have to step up and show who you are. Today is one of those days."

He added: "It is not acceptable for a club of this size, stature and prestige to be in this position."

Spurs fans are rightly anxious, having only seen their team win twice at home in the league this season, one of those coming on the opening day of the season."

BBC Newsbeat's Abu Bakar Yasin says...

While the sun will be out this weekend, two football teams in London are facing slightly gloomier prospects.

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat in Stoke Newington, halfway between West Ham and Tottenham’s grounds, are fans James Lynskey and Angel Layer.

However, they won’t be rooting for the same side – James supports West Ham and Angel supports Tottenham Hotspur.

“I am feeling quite nervous,” James told BBC Newsbeat, ahead of the last day of the season.

“Our chances of winning aren’t looking great,” the 19-year-old says.

“I can see it being the one option where we lose and West Ham win,” says Angel.

The pair said they are both hoping their teams “ignore the outside noise and focus on the pitch”.

  13. Will ex-boss Moyes help out Hammers?published at 15:04 BST

West Ham v Leeds (16:00 BST)

If West Ham are to stay up, they'll need a big favour from former boss David Moyes and his Everton side.

Moyes had two spells as Hammers boss, firstly guiding them to safety in 2017-18 and then returning in December 2019 for a four-and-a-half year stint.

The Scot won the Conference League in his second spell in East London but was sacked after what was deemed a disappointing season in 2023-24.

West Ham finished ninth that year...

Now back at Everton, Moyes will be hoping for a win to finish the season with the Toffees still holding a glimmer of hope of European qualification. More realistic is the chance of a top-half finish.

Anxious faces everywhere you look here. A month ago, just three games ago, West Ham were two points ahead of Tottenham but they have lost three in a row, were dismal against Newcastle last weekend, and now they are relying on old boss David Moyes to dig them out of trouble again.

Think I speak for many West Ham fans when I admit that we'll probably go down today, and deservedly so over the season. However...football is a funny old game, as Greavsie (who played for Spurs & WH) used to say, and anything can happen. It's the hope that kills you!
