Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on when he first thought about leaving: "It's not about when, it's not today or tomorrow. You know at the time, you feel OK let's do it. It's not yesterday that it happened or one week ago.

"Of course we were in the competition and I wanted to be completely away from [thinking about leaving] because I need the players to be with me and me with them.

"At the moment, we cannot fight for anything else because it's already achieved so it is the moment to say, OK I want to say a proper goodbye to my people on Sunday, I want to hug them on the pitch, that is why we announced it."

Man City v Aston Villa (Sun, 16:00 BST)

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on why now: "It's the time, it's not go to sleep and wake up one day, the day after and say now is the time to leave. It's a process that I have felt for a while and always the club respects me an unbelievable [amount] for the decision. The club, of course, has to be ready [for his replacement] and I felt [it was time].

"Listen, this job, every few days, many many years, Salzburg and Anfield and Madrid and the FA Cup and [the business] and now I have to see, live my life and see what happens. 10 years is a lot of time and I think the club needs a new manager, new energy, these incredible players we have right now and start to write another chapter."

Pep nurtured and transformed players. He changed the way they read and play the game. He gifted us many talented managers, some rivalling him. He has no equal in those two attributes!

People seem to have blinkers on when talking about Pep, mentioning the money he's spent, when other clubs have spent more and won A LOT less. Sometimes you can be too successful for your own good.

Manchester City’s announcement of Pep Guardiola’s departure comes on the same day of a significant development across the city at Manchester United.

United have confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as their permanent head coach on a two-year contract.

The 44-year-old took interim charge after Ruben Amorim was sacked in January and has delivered Champions League qualification with an impressive run of form.

Former Middlesbrough boss Carrick has led United to a guaranteed third place in the Premier League after Sunday's thrilling win over Nottingham Forest.

He has won 11 of his 16 matches in charge and has been named on a six-man shortlist for the Premier League's manager of the season award.

No top-flight club has won more points than the 36 United have collected since Carrick's appointment on 13 January.

You can read more on that appointment here.

There's real anticipation building as we wait to hear from Pep Guardiola in his farewell news conference as Manchester City manager.

  13. 'This trophy is so difficult to win'published at 13:26 BST

After nearly 600 matches in charge of Manchester City, it is difficult to single out one moment as the pinnacle of the Pep Guardiola era.

From winning the Premier League with 100 points, to lifting the Champions League, to becoming the first team in history to win four Premier League titles in a row, Guardiola is not short of options.

But I suspect he would point to the club’s 2023 Champions League success as his proudest moment in charge of the Cityzens.

Not only was the 1–0 win against Inter Milan the final piece of the treble, it was, in many ways, mission complete for Guardiola, having accomplished the task he was brought to Manchester City to achieve.

“This trophy is so difficult to win,” said an emotional Guardiola after the final in Istanbul. “It could not be different, and we knew it - firstly because they are really good.

“This competition is like a coin toss. But we were there. I think it was written in the stars this season that it belonged to us, and we did it.”

Some people will say it's "just football" but when I think about how much joy Pep has brought to myself and other fans of this club, it gives me a bit of a knot in my stomach. It'll be difficult to reach his heights again.

    Oli, Chorley

There will never be the words to thank Pep for what he’s done. It’s not just the trophies, it’s everything he brought to Manchester. The belief , the hilarious press conferences, the memes. A true inspiration. The Premier League won’t be the same again.

    Lydia, Manchester

Phil is spot on. Pep's legacy is his style of play which is replicated at all levels of English football. Unprecedented success. Love his charisma & personality. You can see how much the players love him. Thanks so much for the countless memories & 20 trophies. All the best Pep.

Former Chelsea head coach Maresca is the leading contender to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City for the 2026-27 season.

City have been preparing for Guardiola's summer exit for more than six months and talks with Maresca are at an advanced stage.

The 46-year-old wants the job and is expected to be confirmed as Guardiola's successor in due course.

The Italian manager, who won the Club World Cup and Conference League while securing Champions League qualification during his only full season at Stamford Bridge, previously worked at City.

He was an assistant to Guardiola during City's Treble-winning 2022-23 campaign and played a key role in the club's academy prior to joining the first team.

The former West Brom and Juventus midfielder left City in 2023 to manage Leicester, whom he guided to promotion to the Premier League in his only season.

While records have continuously tumbled in the face of Pep Guardiola's ruthless, possession-based style, it is his shaping of some of the best footballers in the world that leaves an indelible mark.

From reinventing positions and formations, spotting potential in the academy, to cultivating a Ballon d'Or winner, Guardiola has made careers.

Many who starred during his tenure have departed not only as club legends but global stars.

Here, BBC Sport compiles a list of 11 players who defined Guardiola's decade in charge:

    • Raheem Sterling

Pep Guardiola's great mentor and inspiration Johan Cruyff once said: "Winning is an important thing, but to have your own style, to have people copy you, to admire you... this is the greatest gift."

As the Catalan genius announces his departure from Manchester City after a decade in charge, Guardiola's legacy can be seen as a monument to the legendary Dutchman who cast his spell over him as a youngster at Barcelona.

Cruyff said: "Winning is just one day. A reputation will last a lifetime."

    Guardiola's will, indeed, last forever.

Six Premier Leagues, the Champions League, three FA Cups, five League Cups, the Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup won - all in his own brilliant style, or at least the style he feels Cruyff bequeathed him.

And it is one that has been admired and copied - a gift left behind for the domestic game to study for years to come.

  20. 'People said his style wouldn't work here'published at 12:57 BST

    Micah Richards column banner

This is the moment Manchester City have been dreading, but the whole of English football is going to miss Pep Guardiola too.

Pep is one of the best managers we've ever seen. The greatest ever? Well, it's hard to disrespect Sir Alex Ferguson when you have that conversation, but those were different times - Pep's the greatest manager of the modern era, that's for sure.

When he replaced Manuel Pellegrini in 2016, City already had some very good players so he was not starting from scratch, but he did not just go on to dominate English football for a decade, he changed it too.

Now everyone plays the way City do, passing out from the back. That didn't happen before he arrived.

Pep's never been afraid to move people around either. He sees the player, not the position, I guess, and makes them an important part of his system and style, in the way he wants to use them.

When it works it is incredible. Like the 2023 Champions League final when City beat Inter Milan in arguably the biggest game in the club's history, and he had a centre-half - John Stones - essentially playing in midfield.

He sees things like that which other managers would never even think of trying. Things that don't appear obvious to us, are to him. And he has done it consistently over the years.

After his first season in England when he didn't win anything and City only made the top four, everyone was saying how his style wouldn't work here, and you can't play that way in the Premier League.

They were wrong, and he has won everything he wanted to win - and kept on winning too.
