Well England have work to do before the World Cup begins in 15 days time. On today's evidence they are a long way from being world champions.

Have a read of Ffion Wynne's match report for full details.

Is there some comfort in the fact Nat Sciver-Brunt, Linsey Smith and Danni Wyatt-Hodge are still going to come into the XI?

The second match of the series is on Saturday. Join us then to see if England can improve.

  2. 'Jemi doing Jemi things'published at 21:57 BST

India captain Smriti Mandhana: "Losing two wickets in the first over is not the ideal start, especially when powerplay has been our strength. Credit to Yastika Bhatia coming back in and playing the way she did, then Jemi [Rodrigues] doing Jemi things.

"Our bowlers still have to come and execute and they were excellent in their execution.

"Nandni Sharma's just brilliant, she's a character, she comes with a lot of fire. I was really excited to see her bowl today. She went for a few runs in her first two overs, then came back and took those wickets."

  3. 'Full faith' batting will come good - Deanpublished at 21:54 BST

England captain Charlie Dean: "Two early wickets but they still kept scoring runs. We couldn't break that [partnership] early enough. We felt like we were in a really good stage with the bat at halfway stage but faltered away at the end.

"I am really proud of the [bowling] efforts girls put in in really hot conditions - Wongy bouncing back. Our fielding effort and energy was exceptional.

"We are really great when we are on top but it is that shift and break momentum back to us.

"The difference felt, today, like a partnership. We weren't able to have set batters at the end. We are working on a bit of a younger middle order and have full faith they will come through."

Player of the match Jemimah Rodrigues: "The way Yastika Bhatia was batting, she took a load off me, the partnership was crucial.

"All we are speaking about is changing the momentum. England were cruising, but we kept playing out shots, kept playing positive.

"Lauren Bell was getting a bit of hold. For an English pitch it was a bit on the slow side, but playing squarer really helped.

"My game is about picking gaps, being smart, putting pressure on the bowler."

The positive for England was Amy Jones.

She needed to find some form after a slow start to the international summer and did with 67 from 48 balls.

Chris: Heather Knight scored far too slowly again and put far too much pressure on those coming in behind. When you need 10 an over you need to take a risk. Using up four overs at less than a run a ball is not going to win anything

Three areas for me. Obviously the 27-run over, that is the anomaly. I thought the fielding was a bit shakier than you'd hope - tighten that up. And the middle phase when England slowed down, didn't move around the crease and faced lots of dots.

Where did that go wrong? The concern is there were problems with bat and ball.

Issy Wong conceded 27 from the second over and from there England fielded sloppily and looked helpless for a while as Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues put on 126 for the third wicket.

Then when it came to the chase, Sophia Dunkley looked out of form again and, Amy Jones aside, their batting looked tame.

There are concerns about Heather Knight's stodgy form.

It won't do England any harm going into the World Cup. They'll be able to reflect where they lost power, where they lost that game.

Ecclestone run out 13 (Eng 144-8)

Still time for a comedy run-out. Sophie Ecclestone is the player dismissed as Charlie Dean just stands her ground as her partner runs towards her at the striking end.

There was a run there and it was Ecclestone's call. Not Dean's finest moment.

Jon G: Just can't see this side testing India or Australia even if they get to the latter end of the tournament. The bowling has its moments, but the batting looks too timid, and the fielding predictably sub-par.

My question is, when Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge come back, can you play Heather Knight and Sophia Dunkley?

Need 55 runs from 12 balls

Sophie Ecclestone cuts her first ball for four to spoil Nandani Sharma's debut figures a tad but she still collects her camp having taken 3-34.

I think one or two of the Chelmsford crowd are starting to head for home.
