Chamari Athapaththu is an excellent match-up against Danni Wyatt-Hodge. Coming into this game, in 11 T20s, the off-spinner has dismissed Wyatt-Hodge on five occasions.

    Chamari Athapaththu v Danni Wyatt-Hodge in T20s before today: 11 innings, 42 runs 5 dismissals, 42 balls, 8.4 average, 6.0 economy rate.

Can the England opener buck the trend and take on the Sri Lankan captain today?

  3. Eng 46-0published at 5 overs

    Clever batting from Danni Wyatt-Hodge.

The England opener accesses the offside with some deft strokeplay to Malki Madara and picks up back-to-back boundaries.

Final delivery of the over from Madara and Wyatt-Hodge flashes a cut through point for another four.

    England have some momentum now.

That's exactly what I wanted Amy to try and it nearly paid off. She went on the back foot but she did get it behind square so the boundary became slightly longer. A slight misfield there. A bit of a strange on ethere.

England are the hosts but there's quite a few Sri Lanka fans in this evening.

Chamari Athapaththu mixing up the bowling and brings herself into the attack.

The Sri Lanka skipper drags a couple down but neither Amy Jones nor Danni Wyatt-Hodge can capitalise.

Jones makes contact with a slog sweep off the final ball of the over which the fielder on the boundary makes a dog's dinner of and allows it to go for four.

Wyatt-Hodge is strong when it comes to punishing full deliveries, striking at 169 in all T20s since the start of 2023. Punishing width is also one of her a strengths striking at 156 when facing wider lines from pace bowlers.

That early boundary has given Danni Wyatt-Hodge a bit of confidence.

The England opener thrashes Sugandika Dasanayaka through the covers and England run three.

Handy strike rotation from her and Amy Jones.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge was waiting for that. A classic over the top shot and the one we like to see.

Mithali Ayodhya is 19, and played three T20s before this one so England will not have seen that much of her apart from on TV.

Very reminiscent of Lasith Malinga with her action.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge flashes at a wider delivery and the ball flies away in the air, but away from the fielder, and crosses the boundary for England's first four.

England come into this ICC Women's T20 World Cup off the back of successive 2-1 series victories over New Zealand and India. Englandʼs victory over India in the third T20I is perhaps their most impressive win across the six matches - England chased 181 with nine balls remaining, courtesy of Alice Capseyʼs 82 (43) and Heather Knightʼs 70* (42).

I think this is England's strongest opening pair. There's obviously different varieties, I think Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Sophia Dunkley are our most destructive pair but you've got to go with who's in form and where people are best suited.
