Rachin Ravindra had a forgettable home series against England in 2024, scoring 129 runs at an average of 21.5 across six innings without a fifty-plus score. He started off this series with a couple of low scores again, but with two fifties in his last three innings, he now has close to 177 runs runs at an average of 35.

    Crikey, alright.

Jamie Smith, whose wicketkeeping has been the subject of criticism in our inbox today, comes up to the stumps mid-way through Jofra Archer's over.

Not sure he'd be the seamer I'd pick to try this out, but England are maybe trying a few things

The next delivery strikes Daryl Mitchell on the gloves, and we have a bit of a break as the physio comes on.

Matt in Farnham at 18:03. What would you replace Bazball with? They have played more like a proper Test team this match. Suggest someone to take over that isn’t going to take us backwards, please.

    Ian, Penarth

Is this England side worse than the nadir in 1999 against New Zealand?

    Jonathan, Cambridge

I'm afraid if its a series defeat surely it has to be the end of Brendon McCullum and Rob Key. It would be eight Tests and six defeats.

  4. NZ 109-3published at 32 overs

All a bit frantic off the last two balls of the over.

Shoaib Bashir collects a return shot from Daryl Mitchell and throws wildly at the stumps.

The ball passes Jamie Smith and Harry Brook dives from slip to stop it running away for four byes.

Mitchell then tries to sweep and gloves the ball - it loops up and comes down just in front of Jofra Archer at short fine leg.

Speaking of Archer, he's going to replace Ben Stokes for a burst before the close.

Shoaib Bashir is bowling just a touch slower than he did in the first innings, while generating more turn this time around.

Shoaib Bashir average speeds and turn in this match:

    • First innings - 57mph, 2.4° average turn
    • Third innings - 56mph, 3.2° average turn

Four more, Daryl Mitchell this time.

He edges Ben Stokes and the ball flies past the slips.

    Frustrating for the England skipper.

New Zealand did need that good partnership between Mitchell and Ravindra.

First four off the bat in a while, and it brings up Rachin Ravindra's half century!

He whips Ben Stokes through square, bringing up the landmark off 81 deliveries.

That also takes New Zealand's score into three figures, and brings up the fifty partnership off 97 balls.

Daryl Mitchell attempts to sweep Shoaib Bashir and is struck on the pad.

The England spinner offers half an appeal, but that's well outside the line.

The groundsman at Trent Bridge has prepared an excellent track for this Test Match. It's only now on day three it has begun to misbehave but still predictable enough for the batsmen to play their shots. A beautifully poised match, with all potential results still possible.

    Karl, Canterbury

Rachin Ravindra looks pretty set, and once that happens it’s hard to get him out.

    Tim, Cambridge

Time to end the 'Bazball' era! It's been another series of controversy and under performance.

That was a flying Duckett then. A flying stop!

  14. NZ 96-3published at 28 overs

A good stop from Ben Duckett, getting down to his right to stop a Rachin Ravindra drive that seemed destined to reach the cover ropes.

Daryl Mitchell then offers an elaborate leave to Shoaib Bashir and sees the ball spin sharply, deflect off his arm and... fly just past the stumps.

  15. NZ 95-3published at 27 overs

A maiden for Ben Stokes, but four runs off the over as the England captain's fifth delivery clips the body of Daryl Mitchell and races past the leg slip to the boundary.

New Zealand's lead extends to 179.

It also leaves West Indies hopes of making the semi-finals in doubt.
