You could argue that Dom Sibley is exactly what England need right now. A solid, considered player who can be a constant amongst the relative chaos. He has been the perfect foil for Dan Lawrence today.

    In reference to the weather...

As a neutral, I want to see a good battle this afternoon.

    Hampshire 15-1 - require 348 to win

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

I'll be honest with you, do I really want to see a full afternoon and evening's worth of cricket where we bowl all the 64 overs and Hampshire are nine down and the last pair face three or four overs to save the game?

    No I don't, no I don't.

Do I want to see a game where we bowl about 25 overs and Hampshire end up about 120-4? Yes.

    Hampshire 15-1 - require 348 to win

Nick Gubbins has clearly read the last entry between overs and is so offended he produces two gorgeous cover drives off Reece Topley for his first two boundaries of the reply.

Topley replies with a bouncer which is called a wide then thumps the pads from ball four, which looked to be heading down leg side.

Gubbins watches the next sail past off stump before defending the last.

Where's the rain? Covers are on at Queens and have been for some time. #Nottsfan

    Nigel, Derby

Honestly Nigel, it looks like the showers are sliding either side of Kennington at present.

Surrey won't mind. How long will their luck last, however?

I think we can agree Hampshire are not interested in a chase here. Unless they can sign Dan Lawrence on loan in the next hour, I suppose...

Matt Fisher sends down a couple of dots before Ali Orr glances perilously close to Lawrence under the lid at short leg.

Orr guides the fifth ball into the covers with a pleasant punch for two before defending with a straight bat from the last.

    Hampshire 4-1 - require 348 to win

The threat of rain looks to have been averted, for now, and it's a little brighter as Reece Topley continues.

Ali Orr gets off the mark with a single bringing the battered and bruised Nick Gubbins onto strike.

He guides the first ball to gully, no run, and the next to point, another dot, before a solid defensive shot off the back foot and a good leave.

Topley has 1-1 from three overs.

58 overs remain in the day.

If Hampshire fail to survive these (maximum - rain allowing) 64 overs then relegate them now. Batting has been woeful for years and only held up this season by an Australian and South African. We deserve Div 2 cricket.

    Russell, formerly of Southampton

Sibley's pace of scoring is not high enough to be considered for England again. His 100 today was not fast enough to allow Surrey enough time to win(probably!)

    Hampshire 3-1 - require 348 to win

Tough man, Nick Gubbins. He's going to crack on and face the final ball of the over.

He guides it into the leg side, no run, and he can catch his breath off strike.

Matt Fisher into his third over with Nick Gubbins on strike.

Some more good leaves and one worked off his hip for no run.

An umbrella has popped up in the stands. Hampshire won't mind a rain delay, but we continue for now.

The fifth ball lands a painful blow and Gubbins hits the deck in pain.

It's spit up off a length and looks to have cracked him on the side of the chest.

    The physio is coming on.

Big appeal from Reece Topley for lbw as new man Ali Orr ducks down at a full ball and gets thumped on the pads.

    Nothing doing this time.

Orr has a nibble at the final ball outside off too.

    Nervy times for the visitors.

    Albert c Brown b Topley 1 (Hampshire 3-1 - require 348 to win)

Breakthrough, but Toby Albert hates it.

He follows it down the leg side from Reece Topley and though he doesn't think he's hit it, the finger goes up and Surrey are cock-a-hoop.

To offer a counter point. Surrey have done really well to create a position to declare. Given their position in the table, letting Hampshire chase a small total when the rain stays away would be suicide.

    Hampshire 3-0 - require 348 to win

Nick Gubbins defends up the track off Matt Fisher's first ball but allows the second to sail through to Ollie Pope, keeping wicket with no Ben Foakes or Jamie Smith.

Solid defence from ball three before a slip to long leg from the next to get Gubbins off the mark with two.

Fisher responds by nipping one back over off-stump, the umpires are having a chat, uh-oh.

We continue for now and Gubbins sees out the over.

345 needed for victory, feels increasingly nominal.

    Hampshire 1-0 - require 348 to win

Reece Topley gets the new ball at the Pavilion End and Toby Albert very nearly plays on from the first delivery, dropping it a couple of inches past off-stump on his toes.

Albert allows four balls to glide past off-stump. Good leaves. No movement on that ball yet.

    Maiden over.

    Hampshire 1-0 - require 348 to win

Toby Albert gets off the mark with a flick of the wrists to backward point. The only run of the opening over.

Silvery skies above, with some darker stuff to the north and west.

    Hampshire 0-0 - require 348 to win

Matt Fisher takes the new ball, Toby Albert is on strike and Nick Gubbins is at the other end.

Fisher produced a glorious ball to oust Albert in the first innings, it seems a lifetime ago.

    As we expected.

There are clouds about but it's dry for now and the players and umpires are out.

64 overs to find 10 wickets, or can Hampshire find 5.5 an over to win it?

Sibley, Duckett, Gay is still my preferred top order for England.

    James, Hampshire

Not the first time this season that Surrey have made poor decisions on how to push for victory. Burns needs to be braver or is his own poor form clouding his judgement?

    Colin, Staffordshire

We'll know more in a few hours, Colin. But yes, there should be questions to answer if Surrey fail to win this game, despite the influence of the weather on days two and three.

Dan Lawrence has to play for England this summer. He HAS to.

    Daniel, Guildford

    Dan Lawrence for England?

    Michael, The Oval

At about 4:45 yesterday, I was thinking we’ve blown a win…up steps Dan Lawrence (again) and all we have to do is declare and we’ve got 64 overs to bowl them out. what a player Lawrence is, I make it 770@85.5 with the bat, such good form

    Daniel, Norfolk

Really don't think the timing of the declaration will be an issue. Rain has started in Uxbridge and absolutely hosing it down. Heading your way

    Graham, Uxbridge

Sadly, Graham's point is a valid one. Some sharp showers on the radar to the west.
