Sam Curran and Ben Duckett are building. At the moment they're looking to stabilise and navigate a tricky period of play for England.

Sam Curran needs to make over a hundred to get back into credit after his Sri Lanka performance.

  3. Eng 94-4published at 17.1 overs

After a tight over, Razaullah shows a bit of impatience by bouncing Sam Curran but the ball sticks in the pitch and the England all-rounder has plenty of time to clinically pull it four.

I think we need to just give England some time to develop as a team now. Talent is there just needs tweaking to make the puzzle fit.

    John, Worcester

At present, the situation is quite tight for England.

    Muhammad, France

  5. Eng 89-4published at 17 overs

Salman Agha whistles through an over of his off breaks.

Sam Curran and Ben Duckett content to rotate the strike with three singles off the over.

Seems a long time ago when Pakistan were in the news. They sacked their coach and got rid of seven players, but this ODI team is so much more settled.

  7. Eng 86-4published at 16 overs

Razaullah, who has already made an impact with his fielding to run out Harry Brook earlier, was a little bit of expensive with his first three overs returns to the attack.

The 21-year-old - who lit up Edgbaston last month with his batting - is much tighter in his fourth over with just a single conceded.

I get people being disappointed with the team and some of the performances, but it's both teams trying their best in a sporting game and promoting the game in a healthy way. Winning is good, but you have to lose and maybe more often than you like. Just enjoy the cricket.

  9. Eng 85-4published at 15 overs

    Salman Agha replaces Saim Ayub.

He darts his second delivery into Ben Duckett's pads but the left-hander flicks it square for a single.

Sam Curran plays a controlled drive through cover for a single of his own.

A single apiece off the over.

Nicely played by Ben Duckett. He played that pull shot from high to low.

He knows he cannot get out, so he is hitting the ball along the floor here.

  11. Eng 83-4published at 14 overs

Ben Duckett was a little bit streaky at the start of his innings but looks comfortable at the crease now.

He gets over the top of a short ball from Haris Rauf and pulls it with real authority to the boundary at mid-wicket for four.

Duckett jabs a single down the ground to keep the strike.

The England opener is unbeaten on 44 from 40 balls.

England need a long, sensible partnership between Ben Duckett and Sam Curran. Anybody confident about that?

    Keith, Aberdeen

If an England batsman gets out to a good delivery or an outstanding catch, that's fine. England more often than not keep giving their wickets away to sloppy/careless shots, that's not fine. This should stop any talk of England winning the World Cup.

This looks to be a good pitch, and a good total is required to put the pressure on.

There is no sense of haste to get through these overs.

  14. England 78-4 at drinkspublished at 13 overs

Another ominous statistic as the players take drinks in Lahore.

  15. How stat?!published at 09:13 GMT

This is the third time England have lost four or more powerplay wickets in an ODI since the start of 2025, only Sri Lanka can match them in that regard.

Today's innings a real contrast to England's ODI outings during the summer, in which they lost two or more powerplay wickets only once (v India in Cardiff)

  16. Eng 78-4published at 13 overs

Ben Duckett and Sam Curran rotate the strike as they work a few singles around the clock off Saim Ayub.

The final ball of the over is short and wide, though, and Curran transfers his weight on to the back foot and cuts it front of extra cover for four.

Pakistan have applied pressure so well and England have not adapted to the pressure that has been applied.

  18. ouch!

    Eng 71-4published at 12 overs

Another bouncer from Haris Rauf, who has two men back on the hook, but it causes more issues for Saad Baig behind the stumps than Sam Curran and is called wide.

The Gaddafi Stadium slowly filling up, by the way. By the time the sun goes down in Lahore and Pakistan come out to bat it should be pretty full.

Rauf hits Duckett on the foot with the penultimate delivery of the over leaving the England opener yelping in pain.

Surely it is time to give Jonathan Trott a go at leading this side. Did an unbelievable job coaching Afghanistan, and it's so frustrating as a fan hearing Brendon McCullum so unbothered and apathetic after every loss.

    An awful start from England.

They seemed a bit impatient and there is so much time in these 50-over games.

It was a little bit helter-skelter.
