  1. 'Neither side wants to end play'published at 17:12 BST

    Northants v Middlesex 284-6

    Kevin Howells
    BBC Test Match Special commentator

I can't imagine that either side wanted to come off at this particular moment, although they're putting the covers out so the staff are predicting rain.

    Is it unfit?

  2. Players still off at Edgbastonpublished at 17:09 BST

    Warks 113-7 v Essex

The rain has finally stopped at Edgbaston, but there's still a lot of water on the sheets which are protecting the pitch so no prospect of play just yet.

The light isn't too clever either.

We've had a smidge under 36 overs today - with the away side having much the better of them.

  3. 50 runs

50 up for Somersetpublished at 17:06 BST

    Hants 238 v Somerset 50-2

A couple for Archie Vaughan in the off side means Somerset bring the 50 up.

Vaughan moves onto 24 not out.

It's just that little area of James Rew's game so far... when the ball just tends to play you a little bit from the crease, you don't quite get off the crease.

If you're going to open the batting it's somewhere people are going to target.

I think he's just got to get into the ball a little bit more.

  5. Bad light stops playpublished at 17:04 BST

    Northants v Middlesex 284-6

The umpires have been coming together regularly of late.

The light is the topic of their chats rather than a good place for dinner and amid the darkening skies, they take the players off for bad light.

Joe Cracknell has 66 and Zafar Gohar is unbeaten on 62.

We've had 73 overs, with another 23 overs due in the day.

Still time for the light to improve and more cricket, so don't go anywhere folks.

  6. Postpublished at 17:01 BST

    Northants v Middlesex 284-6

Eight overs before the new ball is available and we are rather meandering towards it.

Although the light may limit what they can achieve with it this evening.

George Bartlett does brilliantly with a diving stop to deny Joe Cracknell a boundary and save a run as Calvin Harrison's latest over costs five more.

The leggie has done well but not really threatened a second wicket.

  7. Close of play at Bristolpublished at 16:58 BST

    Gloucs 124-6 v Lancs

Play has been abandoned on day one at Bristol with rain preventing any further action after approximately 14:45 BST this afternoon.

It's a disappointing end to a promising first day for Lancashire as George Balderson shone before the heavens opened, taking 4-27 off 16 overs, ripping through Gloucestershire's top order after Cameron Bancroft was run out by Josh Bohannon.

Gloucestershire returned to the crease after lunch 80-2 but a disastrous opening to their second session meant day one belonged to the Red Rose before their momentum was held up by the bad weather in the south west of England.

Lancashire will hope that they can return to the field early tomorrow morning and finish off Gloucestershire's first innings before getting runs on the board as they hunt back-to-back victories.

  8. Postpublished at 16:53 BST

    Hants 238 v Somerset 45-2

    Back-to-back boundaries for Archie Vaughan.

First, the opener pulls a short delivery from Codi Yusuf to the rope.

The following ball is far too short and wide, and this time Vaughan finds the off side boundary to move onto 21 not out.

  9. dropped catch

    Dropped catchpublished at 16:53 BST

    Northants v Middlesex 274-6

Zafar Gohar then gets down on one knee and slog sweeps Calvin Harrison through the legside for four more.

The fourth ball almost brings the breakthrough as Gohar slashes and it flies fast and low to diving first slip Ricardo Vasconcelos.

It would have been an incredible catch but it doesn't stick in his left paw.

  10. 'Abbott tall in his set-up'published at 16:50 BST

    Hants 238 v Somerset 37-2

    Michael Carberry
    Former England batter

He looks quite strong doesn't he? Very tall in his set-up. It's a good weapon to have in your armoury if you play a short pitched ball well.

  11. Postpublished at 16:50 BST

    Northants v Middlesex 268-6

Zafar Gohar plays uppishly at Harry Conway who moves into his 17th over and gets a thick outside edge.

It goes past backward point for one. A rare bit of excitement among the Northants fielders over the last few hours.

  12. Postpublished at 16:50 BST

    Hants 238 v Somerset 37-2

Just as we say that, the ball after James Rew inside edges one behind him precariously for four, the left-handed uses his feet well and sends a lovely looking off drive to the boundary.

Somerset are currently going at four an over.

  13. Postpublished at 16:48 BST

    Hants 238 v Somerset 29-2

James Rew is now in the middle for Somerset and he looks to get off the mark but his straight drive is well stopped at mid off.

The visitors could do with settling down and digging in to take the sting out of Hampshire's momentum as 38-year-old Kyle Abbott comes to the end of his fifth over of his first spell.

I admire the appetite of this young man.

With everything going on around franchise cricket it's so easy to get caught up in the slipstream of everything but he's got his nut down and he's been relentless in terms of the runs he's scored.

  15. 100 runs

    100 partnershippublished at 16:41 BST

    Northants v Middlesex 265-6

The landmarks are coming at pace as Northants continue to struggle with the older ball.

A single from Zafar Gohar off Harry Conway brings up the first century stand of the match off just 157 balls.

They will want to make hay now before the new ball arrives in 12 overs' time.

  16. 50 runs

50 for Joe Cracknellpublished at 16:38 BST

Just a fourth first-class fifty for Joe Cracknell as a thick outside edge off Calvin Harrison beats Harry Conway.

He's dovetailed beautifully with Zafar Gohar and brings up his landmark off 96 balls wih six fours.

He cracks a second boundary off the over to go to 56.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 16:37 BST

    Lammonby c Albert b Abbott 14 (Hants 238 v Somerset 25-2)

Second wicket for Hampshire and Kyle Abbott deserves this!

A loose shot from Tom Lammonby, who looks to drive, but only finds Toby Albert at second slip who makes a good diving catch to his left.

The catching in this game from both sides has been pretty much impeccable.

Abbott has bowled well since his opening delivery and now has a wicket to his name. His 75th against Somerset in his career, too.

  18. Postpublished at 16:36 BST

    Hants 238 v Somerset 25-1

Terrific shot square of cover from Archie Vaughan.

Vaughan stood up tall to Codi Yusuf and dismissed the ball to the boundary.

  19. 50 runs

    Northants v Middlesex 250-6

A splendid knock from the Pakistan bowler who is straight into his stride after the tea break, takign three off the first ball from Calvin Harrison and then scampers a single off Harry Conway.

It's the 16th fifty of his first-class career, coming at a decent lick off 79 balls, with four boundaries and a six.

They're important runs, too, putting Middlesex into an increasingly strong position.

He came to the crease with his side struggling on 164-6.

It also brings up the first batting point for Middlesex in the 66th over and they look in good shape for more this evening.

  20. Postpublished at 16:33 BST

    Hants 238 v Somerset 19-1

Tom Lammonby plays with soft hands and runs the ball down to the third man boundary.

Lammonby (14 not out) has settled now after he was given an uncomfortable introduction to the crease by Hampshire's Kyle Abbott.

Somerset have motored onto 19-1 after their first five overs.
