England captain Harry Brook speaking at the post-match presentation: "Not ideal, we lost five for twenty in that middle period, so we were always on the back foot. The way the boys got in there and fought back, phenomenal. Great effort from the lads.

"Losing five for 20 is never ideal, we definitely would've liked to play better, getting 250 on the board was great.

"We thought the pitch changed quite a bit, it got a bit slower. They only needed to go at five or six an over. We thought we would've had enough if the pitch didn't change.

"We try and make selections based on the pitch, if we got more runs our spinners might've tightened them down. It all goes back to that middle stage.

"We'll get to Cardiff, look at the pitch, make decisions on the team there and come back stronger."

I think this England side need to play more to find the right tempo int his format. They play it like it's an extended T20.

In the next year or so before the World Cup, they need to play it more.

Or, if they do want to make it into an extension of T20, they play the first thirty overs. Then, when you have wickets in hand with 20 overs to go, play T20.

India captain Shubman Gill speaking to TMS on retiring hurt: "I'm feeling better. Just a bit of cramp. I wanted to finish the job for the team but I had to come out. Very glad with the result."

"The target was within our reach but the wicket was tricky. Sometimes it was playing up and down."

On Axar Patel: "Brilliant. When you see your middle order score like that, you get a lot of confidence as captain and as a top order batter. It gives you confidence and means you can start attacking early on."

On playing in England: "It's a great place to be, so many fans sharing the stadiums, it's always full. I love this ground, last time we came here, I had some good memories."

It was a routine victory. Once England lost those three wickets for 60, India were always in the driving seat. Even though England saved it a little bit, it was never enough.

Shubman Gill could still be batting now but the two left handers at the end calmly took India to victory. They were far more competent than England.

Earlier in the game, England had slumped to 80-5 before Liam Dawson and Joe Root led the fightback to help the hosts reach 258.

India all-rounder and player of the match Axar Patel: "The way the T20 series went, I think this is the perfect start for us. I'm very happy with the way I performed today.

"I think I bowled on the particular area I feel I have to bowl, vary my pace, bowl stump to stump. I'm lucky to get four wickets.

"With the batting, we got a very good start and we know we are ahead of the game and we just rotate the strike and finish the game well.

"When Washy [Washington Sundar] was there, we were down a couple of wickets and we have to build a partnership. In four or five overs, we'll think about what we have to do and finish the game."

England tried their best to get back into the game but in truth, 250 was just not enough.

It was a win that was really needed by India, having not won any on this tour but the big guns are back.

Shubman Gill has just confirmed in an interview with Test Match Special he was suffering from cramp and expects to be fit for the second ODI in Cardiff on Thursday.
