Another fine day of County Championship cricket comes to an end.

Sussex are in control against Glamorgan, while Will Luxton's 167 means Yorkshire are building a hefty first innings total against Warwickshire, as are Essex at Leicestershire thanks to Jordan Cox's unbeaten 184.

Elsewhere in Division One, defending champions Notts will try and limit Somerset on day two after the visitors, led by a Jordan Hermann century, ended on 295-7.

In Division Two, five wickets for Liam Livingstone in his first red-ball club game since 2021 helped Lancashire skittle Kent for 178 but the hosts have lost two early wickets in reply.

Nathan McSweeney (117) and Saif Zaib (142) both hit centuries for Northants to put them on top against Gloucestershire.

    Leics v Essex 342-5

Quite a day for Jordan Cox, with Essex announcing a two-year contract extension for the batter , externalwhich ties him to the county until the end of the 2028 season.

Cox dug Essex out of early trouble on day one of their game at Leicestershire, hitting an unbeaten 184 which included a 73-ball century.

  4. Close of play at Chester-le-Streetpublished at 19:02 BST 12 June

    Durham 302-7 v Derbyshire

Durham have worked hard to get through the first day after being put in. All batters have made starts but none have gone on to a very big score.

Ben Raine and Matthew Potts saw them to the close adding 38 so far for the eighth wicket.

The star of the day has been Derbyshire's bowler Ben Aitchison who continues to enhance his growing reputation with four wickets and has the chance of claiming his second five for in consecutive championship matches tomorrow.

    Durham 301-7

Matthew Potts guides a Martin Andersson delivery down to third for four to take Durham to a second batting point.

It's been a team effort from Durham with all the dismissed batters getting to at least 25 but Graham Clark's 51 is the top score so far.

  6. Close of play at Leicesterpublished at 18:54 BST 12 June

    Leics v Essex 342-5

Joey Evison sends down the final over the day and Charlie Allison successfully defends it as Essex reach stumps five down.

They'd have preferred to be three down, as they were until the last 14 balls of the day - but they'd certainly have taken this position after being out in by Leicestershire and reduced to 8-2.

Jordan Cox, making his first red-ball appearance of the season, has been very much the standout performer for the visitors with 184 not out.

  7. Battle of the Pottspublished at 18:53 BST 12 June

    Durham 297-7 v Derbyshire

Matthew scores a victory in the battle of the Potts, flicking Nick away for a boundary.

    Porter b Rehan Ahmed 0 (Leics v Essex 339-5)

And the nightwatchman fails to make it to nightfall...

Jamie Porter misjudges the line from Rehan Ahmed and the ball hits his off stump, giving the Leicestershire spinner his second wicket.

Essex aren't opting for a second nightwatchman - something they have previously tried this season - and Charlie Allison is out there to help Jordan Cox shepherd them to the close.

  9. Close of play at Hovepublished at 18:47 BST 12 June

    Sussex 136-2 v Glamorgan 155

They were going along at more than five an over while Tom Haines and Daniel Hughes were together but Sussex settle for discretionary batting in the final overs as day one draws to a close.

Glamorgan's first innings lasted just 51.2 overs after they were put in by acting skipper Haines, with Indian paceman Jaydev Unadkat marking his first game of the season with figures of 4-29.

Haines and Hughes then put on 92 for the first wicket before the former was caught at slip off Tom Norton.

Another Tom, Alsop, followed, but Hughes (48 not out) - who almost played on to Norton in the penultimate over - and Jack Leaning (18) saw it through to stumps, with Sussex just 19 in arrears.

  10. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 18:45 BST 12 June

    Nottinghamshire v Somerset 295-7

A day in which the pendulum has swung one way and then the other, but it's probably Nottinghamshire who will come off ever so slightly happier of the two sides.

Somerset were 47-3 but recovered well with 68 from 18-year-old Thomas Rew and a century for South African opener Jordan Hermann.

But Notts have picked up three wickets for 61 runs to end the day to probably just about edge it.

However, much will depend on how many Somerset - and Archie Vaughan who is 51* - can add to their score in the morning as to whether that remains the case.

    Critchley b Evison 97 (Leics v Essex 338-4)

There's to be no hundred for Matt Critchley, who is bowled through the gate late in the day.

Critchley had just on-driven Joey Evison for four to move along to 97 and within one stroke of the ton - but he plays around the next ball, which goes on through to hit his stumps.

It's Evison's first wicket for Leicestershire in his short-term loan from Kent - and Essex have sent out Jamie Porter as nightwatchman.

  13. Close of play at Stanley Parkpublished at 18:42 BST 12 June

    Lancashire 17-2 v Kent 178

Well you would have said Lancashire were well on top before they had to bat.

It was a good day for the hosts with the ball. After a delayed start because of rain, Kent were 111-2 at tea, but were reduced to 178 all out thanks in large part to Liam Livingstone taking 5-55 on his first game back in the County Championship in five years. All the fives, make of that what you will.

Keith Dudgeon bowled Harry Singh for a duck in reply before trapping Keaton Jennings lbw for 13 to leave things somewhat in the balance ahead of day two.

Kent will need a few more quick wickets in the morning but this is shaping up to be a good game.

  14. Close of play at New Roadpublished at 18:37 BST 12 June

    Middx 291-8 v Worcs

Middlesex will probably be the happier of the two teams after battling throughout the first day.

At times it was attritional with Sam Robson working hard for his 70. But Leus du Plooy added urgency at the end scoring 85 before being dismissed late in the day

At one stage Worcestershire took four wickets for 21 including two in two balls from Adam Finch who has four in the innings but they'll be frustrated that they couldn't bowl Middlesex out after putting them in.

    Leics v Essex 329-3

If Leicestershire had any slips in for Joey Evison, they might have seen the back of Jordan Cox just now.

Cox's thick edge flies to the boundary, however - and namesake Ben Cox, standing up to Evison's medium pace, had no chance to get across.

This Essex pair have now added 174 so far for the fourth wicket and, unless Leicestershire can find a way through in these last four overs tonight, they'll go into day two still very much on the back foot.

It was an excellent positive innings from du Plooy which has lifted Middlesex towards a decent total.

Jack Leach flicks Mohammad Ali off his legs for two and then has a big swipe at the cover drive... and it takes a thick edge to race away for four at third man.

Leach is just going for it, it seems.
