If Somerset do go on to claim a first County Championship title later this month, the emergence of Josh Thomas as a young opener to watch will be one source of particular satisfaction.

His innings of exactly 100 helped the Division One leaders reach 354-9 on day one at Leicester, but there was also a century by Joe Clarke for second-placed Notts before they were bowled out by Hampshire.

Warwickshire, in third, collected a full haul of bowling points by dismantling Glamorgan for 69, while in Division Two, leaders Durham only managed one with the bat as Seb Morgan took 4-78 for Middlesex.

Middlesex trail by 182 after being frustrated this afternoon by a last wicket Durham stand of 90 between Ben Raine (58 not out) and 26 from number 11, Callum Parkinson.

Sam Robson survived a near run out on 20 and was dismissed shortly afterwards for 26, caught behind off Brydon Carse.

The other wicket to fall was Luke Hollman, also caught behind in a fiery Carse spell for 10.

Northamptonshire survive an eight over mini-session - briefly interrupted by bad light - and reach stumps on day one at New Road with all their wickets intact.

Their decision to put Worcestershire in following a delayed start paid off as skipper Luke Procter took 5-63 to help bowl the home side out in 67.1 overs.

A stand of 83 between Jake Libby (55) and Adam Hose (45) helped the Pears recover from 20-2, but Henry Cullen was the only other batter to reach double figures thereafter.

He reached a maiden first-class fifty in a half-century stand with Usama Mir for the 10th wicket and was last to go, caught on the boundary, for 64.

A full ball from Kasey Aldridge is dug out by Max Holden and pushed down the ground.

A short ball is hooked, parried on the bounce by Callum Parkinson and the ball runs away for four.

Three more runs off the next ball and seven off the over.

A day to forget for Glamorgan after being bowled in just 26.3 overs, having chosen to bat first at Sophia Gardens.

A spell of 5-28 by Ethan Bamber did the early damage for Warwickshire and Colin Ingram's 19 was the only double-figure score in the innings.

The Bears have consolidated their position despite the loss of three wickets - including Will Young for 60.

Sam Hain and Vansh Jani survive the final over of play, as spinner Ben Kellaway is unable to add to his two earlier wickets, and Warwickshire will resume on two with a lead of 85.

Somerset dominated the first session after the morning session was washed out, Josh Thomas and Tom Lammonby batting beautifully together again for another 100 partnership, another Lammonby 50-100 and another Thomas 100.

Some will criticise both for not going big and making daddy contributions, but any side would take that platform.

Some did worry that having James Rew as low as six may be a waste of his talents, but Tom Abell has been in such fine form and Henry Nicholls is one of the best first-class bats in the world.

Maybe they could have gone at three and four with Archie Vaughan more comfortable at seven where he scored 68 off 68 balls last week, but the Lewis Gregory shot for his dismissal was still a surprise to most watching.

Leicestershire were very poor with the ball in the first session but bounced back nicely bowling well in the evening session triggering a collapse helped by that bizarre run out of Henry Nicholls when he and James Rew did not commit early enough to what should have been an easy two.

Nathan Gilchrist's got his name on the card with three wickets, and despite being expensive and contributing too many extras, he bowled some good balls in between.

Warwickshire very much in 'playing for tomorrow' mode now following the recent dismissal of Will Young.

We thought that was it for the day when they went off for bad light at New Road just eight balls into the Northants first innings.

But no, they are back out there with Tom Taylor bowling to Ricardo Vasconcelos and there are five more overs scheduled after this one.

Sai Kishore plays out a maiden from George Balderson to conclude day one at Old Trafford in the meeting of Division Two's bottom two.

Kishore ends on 20 with Daz Ahmed Gloucestershire's top scorer on 33 and these two have put on 45, the highest stand of the innings.

That has pulled them back from 119-6 when it looked like Lancashire might bowl them out today.

Given the Red Rose's batting troubles in recent games, the Glosters may well feel they are well in the game heading into day two.
