    England have Warwickshire 19-year-old Tazeem Ali on as sub fielder and he's right into the action. Azan Awais pushes into the leg side and it would have been close had Tazeem's throw hit.

    Instead Awais survives but will have to continue with a muddy jumper.

    This isn't a bad thing for England. They're having to work a bit harder here. We know that there's harder challenges ahead, South Africa, Bangladesh. It's not coming as easy as it did in the first innings.

    The average score for Pakistan before the fall of the second wicket in this series is 9.3 for two. It's the worst such figure by any team in a Test series in more than one match in the history of Test cricket. A total of 56 runs for their opening stand and second wicket stands across the six innings of this series.

    Jofra Archer is revving it up but Azan Awais continues to play it OK, as he has for much of this series in fairness.

    I strongly disagree with George, London (11:08) regarding the poor quality of cricket against Pakistan. England have done everything (besides getting big individual scores) right against a lacklustre opponent. However, we have developed a top tier bowling attack and have found some good batters in Gay, Cox and Lawrence.

    Looking back in five years this will be remembered as a good summer due to what looks like it will become an established bowling unit, even if we lost to a New Zealand side that lost their captain unexpectedly. Overall 6/10

    Joe Root's hands go over his mouth as Ollie Robinson's twice goes close to the breakthrough with his probing line outside off stump. There's an appeal for lbw too but consensus seems to be it would be sliding down to miss leg stump. It was certainly high.

    Shan Masood and Azan Awais are nudging here and pushing there. It has all been unsettlingly competent so far but it has only been 20 minutes.

    Best shots - Gay hits 60 to guide England out of early trouble

    Solid summer Test cricket from England. Gay looks capable if he can just get one big score to boost confidence. Cox and Lawrence have increased batting competition and a really good bowling unit has been established. Calmness has been brought by Root. So B+ grade.

    Ollie Robinson is chuckling because, having thrown in a bouncer, he's given away four byes. They will go down against Jordan Cox, who had no chance when standing up to the stumps.

    There has to be a signal in those situations, right? Give the keeper the nod that the bouncer is coming.
