  3. Close of play at The Ovalpublished at 19:16 BST

    Surrey 13-1 v Nottinghamshire 184

This looked like it would be a tasty game before it started and we've certainly had a fascinating first day. 11 wickets fell in the 77 overs bowled.

On a green pitch, Notts were quickly in trouble as Dan Worrall and Matt Fisher produced a probing opening spell and the champions soon found themselves 41-5 and 98-7.

But Liam Patterson-White led a counter charge having come in at number eight. In entertaining fashion he scored an unbeaten 76 as Notts added 80 for the last two wickets. Tom Lawes took the final wicket to finish the innings with 5-45.

Crucially Notts struck early in the Surrey innings removing Dom Sibley for a duck before Rory Burns and night-watchman Matt FIsher saw it out.

All to play for going into Day Two.

  4. Close of play in Southamptonpublished at 19:07 BST

    Hampshire 60-4 v Yorkshire 173

All over for the day at Utilita Bowl, where 14 wickets have fallen on an eventful first day.

Yorkshire won the toss and chose to bat first but Kyle Abbott starred with the ball for Hampshire to leave them 83-7 and it needed some useful lower-order runs to get the visitors to 173.

George Hill led Yorkshire's fightback with the ball, taking three wickets late in the day.

    Delicately poised.

Into the final over of the day's play.

  6. Close of play at Leicesterpublished at 18:58 BST

    Leicestershire 113-7 v Glamorgan

A curtailed day at Leicester belonged to Glamorgan. Only 47 overs could be bowled, most of them in the morning session.

Leicestershire actually started quite steadily, getting through the first hour without scoring many runs. But the Welsh county claimed four wickets in the second hour before lunch. They got the fifth just after the interval and added two more in a 12-over spell at the end of the day.

It's been a team effort. All five bowlers used had claimed a wicket each before Timm van der Gugten became the first to take two.

Leicestershire's other loss came from the winner of the daftest run-out of the day award which saw Sheridon Gumbs stranded.

It is a strange-looking pitch with shaved ends and a green middle, so it'll be interesting to see how Glamorgan fare when they bat.

  7. Postpublished at 18:56 BST

    Hampshire 50-4 v Yorkshire 173

Those lower-order runs that Yorkshire managed earlier today, having been 83-7, are looking even more valuable now.

How crucial will that last-wicket stand of 53 prove to be in the wider context of the match?

  8. Close of play at Northwoodpublished at 18:55 BST

    Middlesex v Kent 299-6

Middlesex cannot claim a seventh Kent wicket and Ekansh Singh and Keith Dudgeon manage to add some handy runs in the last 4.3 overs of the day.

Earlier Sam Northeast with 87 and Zak Crawley's season-best 81 had threatened to drive Kent to a very big score but Middlesex have chipped away and kept the visitors in check somewhat.

Kent will be happy enough, but they are only in a strong position, not a dominant one.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:53 BST

    Mike c Cooke b van der Gugten 4 (Leic 113-7 v Glamorgan)

Last over of the day and Ben Mike is out caught behind, apparently off an inside edge.

It confirms a good day for Glamorgan as Timm van der Gugten becomes the first bowler to claim a second wicket.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:52 BST

    Baker lbw b Hill 0 (Hampshire 50-4 v Yorkshire 173)

Sonny Baker is gone for a duck, trapped lbw by George Hill, who is "doing a Kyle Abbott" at the tail end of day one.

The Yorkshire seamer has figures of 3-3 off 6.4 overs.

Earlier, Abbott took 4-17 in 18 overs for Hampshire as Yorkshire were bowled out for 173.

20 balls left to be bowled tonight. This match is moving along quickly and is right in the balance.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:44 BST

    Sibley c Verreynne b Stone 0 (Surrey 0-1 v Notts 184)

Big boost for Notts. After missing the run out attempt in the previous over, Olly Stone strikes with the ball.

An excellent delivery forces Dom Sibley to play and he snicks it behind.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:42 BST

    Lehmann lbw b Hill 2 (Hampshire 48-3 v Yorkshire 173)

    George Hill has another!

Jake Lehmann tries to hit across the line but misses and is plumb in front.

Sonny Baker is in as nightwatchman to join Nick Gubbins with 5.3 overs left to bowl in the day's play.

  13. Postpublished at 18:41 BST

    Middlesex v Kent 282-6

This is a pretty rubbish time to bat for Kent pair Ekansh Singh and Keith Dudgeon.

A handful of overs to survive with little to gain and lots to lose.

Can Middlesex eke out one of them?

  14. Close!published at 18:40 BST

    Surrey 0-0 v Nottinghamshire 184

Rory Burns nearly gives his wicket away first ball.

Going for a run which wasn't there he's sent back by Dom Sibley and, had Olly Stone hit the stumps from square leg, it would have been out.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:35 BST

    Tattersall lbw b Gorvin 15 (Leic 102-6 v Glamorgan)

Glamorgan strike with four overs left in the day. Andy Gorvin claims his first wicket hitting Jonathan Tattersall on his front pad.

Despite Leicestershire's efforts to dig in, Glamorgan's bowlers remain on top.

  16. Five-wicket haul for Tom Lawespublished at 18:30 BST

    Pennington c Foakes b Lawes 9 (Surrey v Notts 184 all out)

Tom Lawes has returned from playing for Sunrisers Leeds in the Hundred to take the fourth five-for of his first-class career.

He wraps up the Nottinghamshire innings by having Dillon Pennington caught behind, leaving Liam Patterson-White stranded on 76 not out.

Lawes, 5-45, will get the whole ball to himself for that.

Surrey will have to negotiate nine overs to the close.

  17. Close of play at Derbypublished at 18:28 BST

    Derbyshire v Durham 102-2

Bad light has brought an early end to proceedings at the OneCoop County Ground.

Durham end the first day on 102-2, which is not a bad position to be in considering the rain interruptions and the cloudy conditions which have lingered when play has been possible.

Alex Lees and David Bedingham will resume on Friday morning, with plenty of batting power - including Ben Stokes - to follow.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 18:28 BST

    Albert b Hill 14 (Hampshire 42-2 v Yorkshire 173)

George Hill gets one past Toby Albert's defensive shot and Yorkshire have their second wicket.

  19. Close of play at Tauntonpublished at 18:24 BST

    Somerset 348-5 v Essex (96 overs)

No runs off the last two overs at Taunton so Somerset close on 348-5 - still two runs short of a third batting point.

With leaders Nottinghamshire having struggled today at The Oval and failing to gain any batting points, that third point for reaching 350 ought to come for second-placed Somerset first thing in the morning to further narrow the gap at the top.

Getting another 102 runs to reach 450 would give them maximum batting points to wipe out the Notts lead at the top completely.

But, getting 102 inside the first 14 overs of any day of red-ball cricket would be unlikely even if you were a fully trained Bazballer.

Another 52 to get a fourth batting point on 400? Now that's a bit more likely!

James Rew will return in the morning on 21, with Jake Ball yet to score.

  20. 50 runs

50 for Alex Leespublished at 18:24 BST

    Derbyshire v Durham 98-2

It's taken him 122 balls but Durham captain Alex Lees reaches his fifty against Derbyshire.

Five and a bit overs left in the day's play, which has been heavily truncated by rain.
