Celebrating pioneering black musicians in British jazz

'Round Midnight

Available for 29 days

This week, ‘Round Midnight joins in on the BBC’s The Music Is Black season, in collaboration with the V&A East in London. The museum’s current exhibition of the same name explores 125 years of Black music in Britain. From Monday to Thursday, Soweto spotlights some of the many pioneering black musicians who helped to shape the course of jazz in Britain. Tonight, he looks to the early 20th century to three influential figures who were notably prominent in the 1930s and 1940s - Leslie "Jiver" Hutchinson, Ken “Snakehips” Johnson, and Bertie King. To listen on most smart speakers, just say: 'Ask BBC Sounds to play Round Midnight.' ‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.
