Liberia's government deny allegations of missing money

Reports and analysis of the day's political, economic and sports news from across Africa.

Liberia's government has denied the allegations of missing money, despite the fact that banknotes are currently not in circulation.

The country's currency crisis is rooted in the alleged disappearance of close to sixteen billion Liberian dollars -- more than one hundred million US dollars -- in banknotes last year.

Information minister Eugene Nagbe said an investigation was launched into the matter, with the help of the United States which confirmed that money was printed by a Swedish company and brought into Liberia.

Death toll has risen in Nairobi, following the collapse of a multi-storey building.

So far 11 people have been rescued including a baby, says the Kenyan Red Cross, but it's feared there are still more people trapped under the debris.

Nine new cases of the deadly Ebola virus have been reported in North Kivu and Ituri provinces in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
