A woman is killed every 4 hours in South Africa, according to report

The killing of a young woman who was raped and murdered when she paid a routine visit to a post office has touched a nerve. Yesterday, a 42-year-old man was charged with her rape and murder. Hundreds gathered outside her university campus for a vigil, and an online petition asking for a return of the death penalty has almost reached half a million signatures.

Over half the population of the Central African Republic "depend on aid to survive", says Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Co-ordinator Ursula Mueller, who is raising awareness and funds for the humanitarian emergency affecting the population of CAR.

In Liberia, Lassa fever has killed at least 21 people including one healthcare worker since January this year, according to Health authorities in the country.
