Botswana asks re-opening the ivory trade

A high-level conference was held in Botswana on the future of Southern African elephants, which urged for the re-opening of trade in ivory. Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe asked the international regulating body CITES to lift a ban, arguing that the sale of their ivory can generate large amounts of money for conservation. The president of Botswana Mokgweetsi Masisi welcomed three of his regional counterparts to the summit with a gift of elephant-foot stools, saying the issue of human-elephant conflict required action.
