Sophia: Suffragette Princess
Anita Anand reveals just why a Princess of the Punjab, chose to risk both her reputation, and her life of privilege to fight for a cause considered anarchic by the establishment.
On the 18th November 1910 thousands of women from across the country marched on Parliament Square in a demonstration for the right of women to vote. Led by the formidable Emmeline Pankhurst it was an event that would make an indelible mark on history. But amongst the famous names of the Suffragette movement who took their places that day, was one whose story has never been told. Walking quietly beside Emmeline Pankhurst on what became known as "Black Friday", was Sophia Duleep Singh: Indian Princess, Goddaughter of Queen Victoria, high society favourite, and...revolutionary fighter for women's rights across the world.
In this film, for the first time, Sophia's extraordinary and long forgotten story will finally be told.
In this film, BBC journalist and author of "Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary", Anita Anand, will embark on a journey of discovery to reveal just why a Princess of the Punjab, chose to risk both her reputation, and her life of privilege to fight for a cause considered anarchic by the establishment, and whose tactics were verging on terrorist. This will be a unique insight into a woman whose fascinating life has remained hidden, yet who played a dramatic role in changing the very course of history.
