Mark Oliver Everett, better known as E from Eels, shares the music that has soundtracked his life, with psychotherapist and DJ Nemone. Delving into the band’s 16th album Cookie Happened, reflecting on how trauma has influenced his songwriting, how his philosophy has developed on the latest LP, and revealing why we should call him the muppet man.
Talking to Nemone, who combines her roles of DJ and qualified psychotherapist, Mark dives deep to share his story and the songs that have moved him, with tracks from Neil Young, Sly Stone and Leon Russell.
Mark has gathered his thoughts on relationships and his way of being in the world and examined his life experiences lyrically for the best part of three decades. Eels ‘Beautiful Freak’ album landed in 1996 gifting us ‘Novocaine For the Soul’ and ‘Susan’s House’. Some immensely traumatic experiences soon after this period were laid out in his book ‘Things The Grandchildren Should Know’ which came in 2008, which he recalls philosophically in the programme. He also explores his complex relationship with his dad, physicist Hugh Everett III, which was laid out in the BBC4 film Parallel World, Parallel Lives.
In this series Nemone also talks in depth to musicians Julia Jacklin, Aja Monet and James Ellis Ford.
