Newly qualified midwife Tacha is still getting to grips with the pace of Basildon University Hospital’s busy maternity ward. Summah, who is registered blind, uses all her experience in theatre.
Fresh out of training, Tacha is facing the overwhelming reality of her new high-pressure role and is still adapting to the fast-paced environment that is Basildon University Hospital’s maternity ward.
But the mum of two is determined to succeed having made several sacrifices to follow her dreams of becoming a midwife.
In theatre, Mary is on hand to support first-time mum, Chloe, and her partner Jack. Shortly after giving birth to a baby girl, Chloe is giving serious thought to naming her after Mary. This would be a first for the newly qualified midwife.
Summah is a midwife like no other at Basildon. She suffers from Retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition that is slowly causing her to lose her vision. She never thought she’d make it as a midwife but is now one of the most valuable midwives on the ward.
Today she is looking after Keylee who is about give birth to her second child via caesarean section as the baby is measuring small. Keylee also has MRSA. As Summah heads to theatre with Keylee, Tacha and Mary are unwinding after a busy few shifts with a night out to the bingo. But this is no ordinary bingo experience, and the young midwives are in for a surprise.
