Episode 1

At just 24 years old Mollie makes being a midwife look easy as she helps a woman to give birth, but Mary is still getting used to her new surroundings and after a tough shift is doubting herself.

Delving in to the lives of a dynamic cast of young midwives at Basildon University Hospital in Essex, we meet Mollie, Mary and Tacha.

Mollie was born to be a midwife and at just 24 is already three years qualified. She primarily works on the Delivery Suite, where the pressure is always on. Today’s shift is no different as she juggles multiple patients, helping one mum to give birth.

After birthday brunch with fellow newly qualified midwives, Tacha and Izzy, Mary is starting a 12-hour shift.

Mary trained in Coventry but is completing her preceptorship year - a period of structured transition to guide and support newly qualified midwives - in Basildon. She’s eager to prove herself but is struggling to keep up and is still very much getting used to her new surroundings.

After a tough day she leans on fellow midwife Izzy for moral support, who gives her some sound advice ahead of her next shift.

And Mary must put her doubts about her ability to do the job to one side almost immediately, as she guides first-time mum, Chloe, through the early stages of labour. All seems to be going well until Chloe is rushed to theatre.
