Reprieve

Reprieve fights for people facing the death penalty, torture and other extreme human rights violations. We take on cases one at a time and confront the systems that put people there.

A decade on death row for a crime he didn't commit

A decade on death row for a crime he didn't commit
Ishmael spent ten years on death row in Malawi, accused of a crime he did not commit. The confession he had signed was in a language he couldn't read, extracted after police beat and starved him. Reprieve took on his case and challenged it in court.

Finally set free

Finally set free
Reprieve’s lawyers were with him in the courtroom when his innocence was proven and he was finally set free. Ishmael told us how, on returning to his village he felt “like I had been born again”.

Ishmael is not alone

Ishmael is not alone
Ishmael is one of the 193 people in Malawi who were facing execution. Reprieve and its partners fought each case one by one to get their death sentences lifted. We are now doing the same in Kenya, fighting for 5,000 people.
