Rescue Roulette: Dogs from Abroad

With some new owners finding their pets exposed to unexpected disease, vets’ bills and heartache when adopting rescue dogs from abroad, is there enough oversight of the sector?

Rehoming a dog is a big decision. But with online ads showing cute dogs in need of rescue from abroad, prospective owners can be tempted to go ahead without meeting their new pet in advance. Kath Stanczyszyn investigates the trend for direct delivery of foreign dogs and the potential pitfalls of what’s been dubbed a ‘Deliveroo for dogs’.

There’s evidence of a rise in disease linked to foreign dogs, and some owners say they signed up for a pet with a suitable temperament, only to find themselves stuck with an aggressive or volatile pet they struggle to cope with. Charities say original importers don’t always stick around, and rejected rescues can cause pressure on UK charities.

Is the system for overseeing foreign dog rescue organisations fit for purpose? Should more be done to better protect owners and the dogs
themselves?
