Maximus Decimus Meridius, heir and favoured general of the Roman emperor, is betrayed by the emperor's son Commodus and enslaved to a gladiator trainer.

However, Maximus proves himself a virtuoso in the arena, and his career takes him closer and closer to Rome, the Colosseum and the only thing he cares about - vengeance against Commodus.
