A Hundred Years Of Us Ep 4/5

Thursday 31 March
9.15-10.00am BBC ONE (Schedule addition 16 March)

Michael Aspel is joined in the studio by Gloria Hunniford, who shares memories from throughout her prolific career, in the penultimate edition of A Hundred Years Of Us.

Equality for women was one of the definitive social movements of the 20th century and today viewers meet the ladies of Ford Motors, Dagenham, whose strike in 1968 changed workplace life for all women.

Viewers hear the moving story of the GI Babies – the babies born as a result of relations between British women and American soldiers stationed here during the war. Ann Jones was just six days old when she was put in an orphanage in Minehead, Somerset – as were many other GI Babies who were mixed race. Ann shares her touching memories of going to Wales aged four to meet her new family and how, 32 years later, she tracked down her birth mother to learn the true story of her conception.

Phil Tufnell also faces his penultimate 1911 jobs challenge, as he experiences life in the manual textiles industry – at the Queen Street Mill in Sheffield – to see if he can cut it in the world of cotton.

In today's visit to the census family – the Tarrants, who have living members on each census dating back to 1911 – they recall how the family lived through the tough economic times in the Seventies, but then how the mood of the nation was buoyed by the Royal Wedding of 1981 and the economic boom of the late Eighties.

Neil Morrissey – Care Home Kid Ep 2/2

Thursday 31 March
9.00-10.00pm BBC TWO (Schedule addition 16 March)

Neil Morrissey was just 10 years old when he was sent into care. Now, after 30 years of wondering, he has finally decided to confront his past. For most of his adult life Neil believed that he'd been taken into care due to his bad behaviour but, as he's already discovered, the reasons were far more complex.

In the second and final episode of Care Home Kid, Neil explores what happens to young people when they leave care. When it reached time for Neil to leave his care home, he was taken in by the family of a school friend so that he could continue his education and follow his aspirations to become an actor. Now, 30 years on, Neil at last finally gets the chance to thank that family.

With almost 60,000 children in foster care in the UK, Neil is intrigued to find out find how the type of care today compares to what he once experienced.

In Bristol, Andy has been fostering for 25 years and during that time she has looked after around 80 young people. During his visit, Neil learns how important a sense of permanence and security is in a young person's life.

Neil travels back to the Isle of Dogs, his home during his drama school days, and recounts this experience with three of his close friends. Neil is surprised to learn he transferred many of the habits learnt from the children's home to his student life.

Riverside Children's Home, where Neil's brother was sent, has been at the centre of serious allegations relating to abuse. Unfortunately, Steve died without ever discussing what happened at the home with Neil. Finally, Neil manages to meet a senior officer on the case, in the hope of discovering if Steve was affected by the abuse.

Having spent so much time looking at his childhood, Neil feels it is important to pass this knowledge on to his son, Sam. For the first time, father and son spend time discussing what lasting effects the care system has left on Neil.
