Both clubs were looking to win their first trophy of the season, with Rangers having missed out on the SWPL title last weekend.

Celtic had lost to Rangers in all four league meetings this season and were also knocked out of the SWPL Cup by their Glasgow rivals.

It was Rangers who made the stronger start, dominating possession throughout the first half.

However, they were unable to find a way past Celtic goalkeeper Adelaide Gay.

In the 26th minute, Celtic managed to break the deadlock.

In the second half, Rangers had a number of shots on target but could not get past the Celtic keeper.

In the 58th minute, Celtic went down to ten players after Scotland defender Emma Lawton was sent off after being shown a second yellow card.

Rangers piled forward in the closing stages, hitting the woodwork when Gay punched a corner onto her own crossbar.

But Celtic managed to hold on for the victory - their first derby win over Rangers in nearly two years.

Speaking after the match, Celtic manager Grant Scott said he was "very proud" of the team.

He added: "We had to defend for our lives. The players showed such commitment to each other. That's what it's all about.

"This cup run has been magnificent. The season has not been great, but this salvages something for us."
