Major Udai Gurung, from Colchester, said he was "over the moon" to learn that the Home Office had granted his sister Lal indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Major Gurung, who served this country for his entire military career and has been awarded an MBE, said he was "so relieved" to find he would not have to send his sister home.

Controversial plans to build hundreds of homes in Lakenheath have been approved.

Forest Heath District Council’s planning committee met on Wednesday, external, where four separate applications for a total of 663 homes and a primary school were passed.

Concerns had been raised because of the development's location beneath a military jet flight path for aircraft using the village's USAF base, prompting the parish council to warn it would pursue a legal challenge if the homes were approved.

Councillor Hermione Brown, Lakenheath Parish Council, external’s planning sub-committee chairman, said she was disappointed with the decision to approve the plans.

"We feel that councillors did not take the time to really understand the full implications of the disastrous decision to allow residential housing, a pre-school and a primary school to be sited directly under the return flight path to RAF Lakenheath," she said.
