A week-long crackdown on speeding drivers in Suffolk has led to more than 1,100 drivers being caught breaking limits.

Police said 998 were caught by fixed or mobile camera sites, while 170 were stopped by police patrol cars.

"Speeding is recognised as one of the ‘fatal four’ offences which leads to people being killed or seriously injured in a collision along with drink driving, using a mobile phone and not wearing a seatbelt," Ch Insp Kris Barnard said.

One crash victim has life-threatening injuries and the other person's injuries are described as life-changing. Both have been taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

Police said the road will remain closed during the evening rush hour. Officers are appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage.

A judge urges both parties to mediate as the case has "tears written all over it".

Police have increased their patrols in the Greenstead area of Colchester following the death of a man found with stab wounds.

The body of 52-year-old Gordon McGhee was found in a flat in Forest Road on Wednesday last week.

A 32-year-old man has been charged with murder and police said there would be an increase in officers and police dogs on Friday as searches continued.

Police have also re-appealed for dashcam footage and any witnesses to come forward.

Sunday's East Anglian derby will be shown on Sky Sports via the red button.

It had been understood that the clash between Ipswich Town and Norwich City would not be televised, however Sky announced today that it would be screening the match, which kicks off at 12:00.

Subscribers of the broadcaster will be able to access the match from its Main Event and Football channels.

The main road between Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk has been closed by a serious accident and all emergency services have been sent.

Two cars crashed on the A134 close to Alpheton and the fire service sent four appliances after reports that three people were trapped in the vehicles.

The air ambulance is also there and police have closed the road in both directions while paramedics and fire crews help casualties.

Essex Police, external has given spit guards to officers to protect them while they work.

The controversial mesh hoods were introduced in custody rooms last week - and are put on suspects to stop them spitting or biting officers.

The force says officers who are spat on "risk contracting illnesses or disease".

Many other police forces in the UK already use spit hoods, including Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Six people will appear together for the first time at Ipswich Crown Court on Monday charged with the murder of Tavis Spencer-Aitkens.

The 17-year-old died in hospital after being stabbed in east Ipswich on 2 June.

Leon Glasgow, 41, of no fixed address, and Isaac Calver, 18, of St Helen's Street in Ipswich, did not enter pleas when they appeared at the same court today.

They will appear alongside Aristote Yenge, 23, of Spring Road in Ipswich, Callum Plaats, 23, of no fixed address, and a 16-year-old boy from Colchester, who cannot be named for legal reasons, who have all pleaded not guilty.

Adebayo Amusa, 20, of Sovereign Road in Barking, east London, who will also appear as a co-defendant, has yet to be enter a plea.

Football fans travelling to Portman Road for the Ipswich v Norwich derby on Sunday will have a greater choice of trains.

Greater Anglia is running one additional Ipswich-bound train, with a 09:40 service leaving Norwich ahead of the noon kick-off, and two extra trains heading back, at 14:29 and 14:43.

The hourly service from Norwich at 44 mins past the hour, and from Ipswich at 22 minutes past the hour, will be operating as normal.

Greater Anglia said it would run 64 buses to Ipswich from Ingatestone, Colchester, Manningtree and Felixstowe "to make sure all fans are able to attend the match" during Network Rail engineering works in Essex.

Firefighters are still tackling a blaze that has destroyed 150 tonnes of straw at Blundeston near Lowestoft.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue, external crews from Lowestoft, Wrentham and Beccles were mobilised at 21:46 on Thursday and were still at the scene containing the fire late this morning.

The fire service said they were now allowing the fire to "burn itself out".
