BBC Local LivePolice are investigating a suspected arson attack at the former Little Plumstead Hospital.
Firefighters were called to the derelict building on Hospital Road shortly after 02:00 on Sunday after a member of the public reported seeing flames.
Investigators haven't been able to confirm the cause of the blaze at the former mental asylum, but it's believed to have been started deliberately.

BBC Local LiveA man and a woman have died following a road traffic collision in Methwold Hythe.
A green Mini Cooper left Severalls Road and collided with a tree between 19:00 on Sunday and 07:00 today.
The road remains closed between Thornham Road and the Broad Drove junctions while officers assess the scene. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team at Norfolk Constabulary.

The road is partially blocked, resulting in slow traffic, at the A1243 Pasteur Road junction because of an overturned car on the roundabout.

A population explosion is expected in parts of the county by 2024, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.
South Norfolk will see the greatest rise - 12.5 - with Norwich and Breckland expecting just over 7%. It is anticipated all areas of Norfolk will see at least 4% more people living here over the next eight years.

Community Chaplaincy Norfolk is a Christian service supporting ex-offenders, external to successfully rebuild their lives after prison.
The project’s new co-ordinator, Susan Carne, spoke about her work recruiting volunteer mentors and sympathetic landlords.

BBC Radio NorfolkNorfolk's rural landscape is under threat by mass strategic development.
That's the concern being raised by the county's branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). It comes as figures from the Office for National Statistics, external (ONS) suggest all areas will see population rise within 10 years by up to 12.5%.

BBC Radio NorfolkThe population of south Norfolk is set to rise by more than 12% over the next decade, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics, external (ONS).
It's predicted all parts of the county will see an increase but the biggest impact is likely to be in Norwich, Breckland and the south of the county, meaning more pressure on housing and services.

BBC Local LiveArson is believed to be the cause of a fire at a former mental asylum on the outskirts of Norwich.
The derelict Old Plumstead Hall was gutted in the blaze, which broke out early on Sunday morning. More than 50 firefighters attended the scene, and a controlled demolition was carried out for safety reasons in the afternoon.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer David Ashworth says the building had stood empty for a number of years, with all windows and doors boarded up, and there was "no obvious source of ignition".

On Friday afternoon a coach caught fire on the A11 between Wymondham and Attleborough. All of the 71 passengers, who were returning to Luton after a day trip to Great Yarmouth, got off safely.
