If you pay a waste removal company to take your rubbish and they fly-tip it, you could be liable to pay the fine, a council in West Yorkshire has said.
Calderdale Council say it is because of a technicality which says residents must show a duty of care when disposing of household waste.
Senior highway enforcement officer Sam Pearson said if people are paying businesses to remove things like fridges and sofas, they should check they hold an upper tier waste carrier licence.
This can be checked on the Environment Agency website,, external he said.

On BBC Radio Leeds, Streeting has been asked about the delay in appointing a chair for the independent inquiry into maternity failings at hospitals in Leeds.
The Health Secretary announced an inquiry in October after a BBC investigation found the deaths of 56 babies and two mothers at hospitals in the last five years could have been prevented.
Speaking to presenter Gayle Lofthouse, Streeting said he was conscious of the “tragedy, trauma and distress” families had suffered, adding his department had been working with those affected to agree a chair and terms of reference for the inquiry.
“Its taking a bit longer than any of us would like, but I think it’s important to get that decision right and to make sure it’s got the confidence [of those families],” he explained.
Streeting said that, notwithstanding the inquiry, the government was “actively” looking at trying to drive immediate improvements at maternity units in the Leeds area, as well as in Bradford, where the hospitals trust was one of 14 across the UK being separately investigated over maternity failings.

Linda Holmes said she founded Sensory World in Dewsbury after seeing a lack of spaces for children with special needs.
The centre offers sensory rooms, outdoor play, craft sessions, and various clubs as a way of creating a safe and inclusive environment for neurodiverse families across Yorkshire.
Linda spoke to Gayle Lofthouse at BBC Radio Leeds about how she used her own funds to convert an old pub into the calming space.
Since then, BBC Children in Need funding has helped Sensory World to develop and support children with special needs.
Sensory World provides vital support and play for kids with additional needs.

When I signed up for this challenge, I thought it was going to be a doddle - but I’d forgotten how hilly it is around Bradford and Leeds.
The whole thing has been a blast, with folk coming to see us and donating money, as well as going past schools with the kids cheering us along.
Everyone’s support has really helped motivate us to keep going.
It’s been a great challenge, even if people were shouting "Craigey" at me most of the way due to my 14 years on Coronation Street!
Walking around Valley Parade with Bradford City football legend Ian Ormondroyd was a particular highlight.
Finishing at Darley Street Market with the Bantam of The Opera choir serenading us with their brilliant version of Take Me Home, Midland Road was the perfect ending to day one.
I just wish BBC Radio Leeds daytime presenter Gayle Lofthouse, who was doing the other half of the challenge, hadn’t beaten me across the line!

Reporting from Meltham, West Yorkshire

Here on Tinker Lane in Meltham, West Yorkshire they've pulled out all the stops to make sure that the VE Day commemorations are also celebratory.
Residents have organised a street party and have brought out the bunting, baked cakes and are even enjoying a few bottles of fizz.
Throughout the day the plans involve the Meltham and Meltham Mill band who will give a special performance, and there was also a flypast by a Spitfire.
Valerie Swingbank, pictured with family friend Layla, has brought out her commemorative tea towels which show details of the ration books issued by the government during the war.
She said: "We're lucky and fortunate that we all get on with each other to organise events like this.
"It wouldn't be possible without this community."
Although the mood is celebratory, she told BBC News she felt it was also "very important to remember those who didn't come home".
Yvette Cooper says constituency work "carries on" as she starts her new role as foreign secretary.
