Could there be help for drivers and fuel costs in the upcoming Budget on 28 October?
Average diesel prices are within a whisper of the highs reached after Russia's full-scale invastion of Ukraine in early 2022. Petrol costs have also climbed following the US-Israel war with Iran which has affected global oil supplies.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham was a little vague on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. He said that the conflict in the Middle East “has had an impact on people’s energy costs”.
He added: “We will now have to deal with that and support people as best we can through the Budget and we will do those things but in a way that is highly prudent with the running of the UK economy and the Chancellor of Exchequer is very, very clear about that.”
But Chancellor John Healey – while careful not to reveal what might be in his famous red box on the big day – told the Sunday Times he was aware of high petrol and diesel prices.
“I will take them into account when I make my budget decisions,” he said.
“This is part of a recognition that where government can, we’ll do what we can to offer people a bit of breathing space.”
Fuel duty was cut by 5p per litre in March 2022 by the Conservative government. The freeze has been extended but fuel duty is scheduled to rise by 3p a litre in January and 2p in March.
