No new trains in Wales before 2020, Stuart Cole warns

Rail passengers in Wales are unlikely to see any new trains on local services before 2020, a transport expert has warned.

Prof Stuart Cole from the University of South Wales will tell MPs on Monday that projects such as the proposed ÂŁ600m South Wales Metro promise faster and more frequent electric rail services.

The Welsh Affairs Committee is holding an inquiry into the prospects for a new rail franchise for Wales and the Borders, which will take effect in late 2018.

Mr Cole told BBC Radio Wales improvements would take some time to come.
