You, the artist

Ever wanted to see your work hanging on the wall of an art gallery? Well, now’s your chance, as all you need to become one of the artists in Cornerhouse’s new exhibition, Bitmapping, is a camera phone and a bit of imagination.

Bitmapping

  • The pictures taken as part of Bitmapping will be hung in the café bar at Cornerhouse from Fri 13 Apr until Sun 17 Jun
  • New images will be added daily

The idea is to create a visual version of Chinese whispers - a chain of linked images between strangers – and anyone can take part, from professional artists to beginners and everyone in-between.

It goes like this. If you want to be involved, you sign up by text and then wait for your turn to be the artist. An image is sent to your phone without warning at some point during the exhibition. As soon as you have received it, you’ve got two hours to respond with your own image, which is recorded centrally and sent on anonymously to the next person for their response.

Of course, as the artist, it’s up to you what the picture is of, but it’s worth bearing in mind that this is a collaborative work that is meant to string together to create a visual story, so the picture should be some sort of response to the one you received. Each picture received will be printed and arranged as they come in on the walls of Cornerhouse.

That means not only will you be able to see your own work, you’ll also get to see what led up to it and how people responded to your art.

It does cost 50p to join in, but you only have to pay it once and there's no subsequent charges for that entry. Also, there's no limit to the number of times you can take part, providing you've got enough 50ps (and you are over 16 and the bill payer of the phone that’s being used).

For the full terms and tips on how to make sure a phone is on the best setting for taking and sending images, go to the main Bitmapping site.
