Last summer's Beethoven Experience included a concert series of all of the Beethoven symphonies coupled with a free download offer of the Symphonic Cycle from the BBC Radio 3 website. The Orchestra thrilled audiences and critics alike with their performances of the Beethoven Symphonies over two weekends in May and June. But it was the experiment by BBC Radio 3 and the BBC Phil to offer recordings of the concerts as free downloads which astonished everyone in the world of classical music. The BBC3 website which offered the free downloads attracted a phenomenal 1.4 million requests from all over the world and was greeted as a revolution in classical music listening. | | Principal Conductor Gianandrea Noseda |
The series took place at The Bridgewater Hall and was conducted by the BBC Phil's Principal Conductor, Gianandrea Noseda. Chris Hoyle, cellist with the Orchestra and General Manager Richard Wigley accepted the South Bank Show Award at the ceremony which was televised on Sunday night. (29 Jan 2006) Also nominated in the Classical Music section were composer Thomas Adès for his Violin Concerto, and Sir Colin Davis and the LSO for the Beethoven and Tippett series. |
