Christmas

Manchester's 'tree'
Manchester's 'tree'

Time to get real again?

As the Christmas lights are switched on again, all eyes turn to the festive focal point, the 50 foot illuminated cone tree. The question is though, should it be the city’s centrepiece at all, or is it time we went back to having a real tree?

For Manchester City Council, there’s a couple of simple reasons why the cone has been in Albert Square since 1999.

Firstly, it comes down to money. It takes a large wad of cash to ship, erect and decorate a real tree every year, whereas the cone is a simple five piece structure that is easy to get up and costs little more than the price of a few replacement bulbs to upkeep, making it much more cost effective.

Secondly, it’s a unique image for Manchester. When they decided to take the plunge and replace the real tree six years ago, they went for a design that was unique to Manchester and the cone remains the only one of its type being used in a city-wide celebration.

So are they still on the right track or should Mancunians be treated to a real tree again? What do you think of the cone?
