Nina Finlay was there to find out if she's got more than one great song in her. Not surprisingly the Academy was packed (and clammy) for the second visit of the year from Kate Nash, following the success over the past six months of her debut album, so I took solace at the back, away from the front of stage gatherers and of course, where the bar is. Her manifestation on stage set the crowd off nicely as she humbly took to her pew at the keyboard, centre stage as she does, with her boudoir-esque background and name in neon lights.
We were nestled into the evening with a couple of down-tempo numbers, which has got to be said didn’t exactly get everyone excited, the tunes that followed varied from leisurely paced love songs, sang rather than spoken, to agitated rants….and I couldn’t be sure that the crowd weren’t secretly, impatiently waiting for her catchy chart ditties when they clapped and hollered at the end of each contribution, slight mumblings could be heard after the intro to each and some major disinterest around the room, with people chatting amongst themselves, how very rude! I must admit, I struggled to hear her `singing’ voice over the band during the down-beat beginnings, but was comforted/relieved? later by the sound of her cockney dulcet tones, through which I had originally pigeon-holed her. InvigoratingI was impressed with the variety of which her set contained and its invigorating to know that her tunes are definitely not `samey’, something here for everyone perhaps, although, I’m going to go for…stick to what you know, its good that she hasn’t got all her eggs in one basket, but I’m not sure that the more off the wall numbers would be as popular, mainstream wise – I did enjoy `Dick Head’ but you wouldn’t play it at your Christmas party if you catch my drift. Nearing the end of the set, the cats got their cream, the change in atmosphere when she began `Foundations’ was grand and the whole room sang back at her word for word, there were people dancing at eachother, pulling silly faces & singing at their blokes, cos their `mates were much fitter!!’. To end the evening, the audience were invited to her after-show party, which was advertised by flyers all over the venue, keeping it real? Or got no mates? Either way, I didn’t stay to find out. I did enjoy the gig and performance but unfortunately there is only so much of the voice that she uses that I can take! last updated: 14/11/07 SEE ALSOYou are in: Liverpool > Entertainment > Music > Event Reviews > Kate Nash @ Academy 2
