Pothole

Road needs £4m to fix holes

Liverpool City Council says it will cost £4 million to repair the potholed road around Sefton Park. Do you know of worse roads in the area. Add your suggestions here.

Calls are being made for Liverpool City Council to repair the pothole strewn road around Sefton Park.

The council says fixing the unadopted circular route around the park would cost £4m, instead they plan to carry out a £10,000 programme of repairs on the road which is one of the main routes used for charity runs.

The road circling Sefton Park is unadopted which means the council isn’t committed to repairing it under the 1980 Highways Act.

The council estimates that to bring the roads up to an adoptable standard would involve spending between £3 and £4 million for new sewers, drainage, lighting and carriageway and footway construction.

A council spokesperson said “At this time, there are no funding sources that would assist the city in contributing to bringing the roads around Sefton Park that are part owned by the city to an adoptable standard.

“In the interim, Enterprise-Liverpool will continue to repair the roads on an ad hoc basis in the interest of public safety.”

Sefton Park, Liverpool’s largest urban park, recently won almost £5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund to carry out major improvements on the Grade II Listed park.

The worst road in Liverpool by a mile!!

Pete Leckie
Where does the council get the figure of £4 million from? Why can't the road just be maintained to an acceptable standard? More smoke and mirrors from the evil cabal running LCC

Steve Jacobsen
I use this road every morning to get to work and i can safely say I have never seen a road in such disrepair. The whole ring road around the park needs relaying immediately as many of the potholes are getting wider and deeper.

Simon Holleron
The worst road in Liverpool has to be Belmont Drive in Liverpool 7 which runs in between West Derby Road and Newsham Park.

Jenny Baker
Liverpool is roadwork city at the moment.Hopefully once they are completed,it will transform the city, ready for Captial of Culture 2008 but it seems a shame that following the Hertiage Lottery Fund has given the City £5 million to restore the buildings. That visitors will have to see the soory sight of the roads, just makes me sad when running round the park in the morning for my run.

Linnet Lane is a health hazard! Its terrible.

Could not comment as to whether to road aroauound the park is the worst roads.I suspect it is not. Traffic volumes are not large, however it seems a shame that improvements to the road could not be made to mirror significant improvements planned for the park. One area of concern is that if the road is 'improved' and lighting enhanced, that speeds on the road are not increased. Perhaps the poor condition of the current road surface, in places and the relatively modest lighting levels act as a 'traffic calming' measure. If the road were to be brought up to adoption standards and the lighting as a consequence improved I suspect speeds and accidents would increase significantly. The park road, may thus become a 'race track' for those bent on speed and thrills, late at night and possibly by drivers not legally entitled to drive the vehicles concerned.

Upper Hampton Street is the worse road in Merseyside. It runs to the back of 150 Upper Parliament Street to the car park for a block of flats and it's constantly full of rubbish. The bin men miss collections regularly, there is glass, nails and wood all over the pot holed surface. People use it as a dumping ground for anything from fridges and cookers to cash machines and gambling machines. We've seen it all! I've replaced 3 tyres in 2 years using this road, now I keep a brush in the back of my car so that I can sweep the broken glass away before I use it to reach the car park. We've had to call the council probably every week since we moved in 2 years ago and apparently it's still not even in the pipeline to be resurfaced.

Muirhead Avenue by the Shops is bad, not so much pot holes but it feels like your on the Cat & Mouse in Blackpool.

Paul Haudock
They should leave it pot-holed. People use it as a car race-track now, so improving the surface will merely encourage them to drive even faster.

Steve Miller
If the council spent less on speedbumps and more on ensuring the roads aren't full of holes money wouldn't be an issue!

J Hill
Its about time that the council got its finger out and repaired this road, as it has cost us a small fortune in new tires. The roads in Liverpool must be the worst in the country. God help visitors to the Capital of Disaster in 2008. They better bring extra tyres with them!!!

All the roads in the Wirral are a disgrace. Especially those around Birkenhead Park area. About time the council got their act together and repaired the infostructure we pair for.

Brows Lane in Formby is so uneven, driving down it is like being on a fairground ride

Sefton Park is dreadful to drive around, dodging the holes in the road. My car has gone down some of the holes on several occassions and I have friends whose vehicles have been seriously damaged on that road. I admit we don't need more roadworks in the City but this is the WORST road I have ever driven down!

Helen Carroll
The potholes are more than just an eyesore; I actually hit one once and it damaged the wheel on my car. I called the council and they said to send in a letter of complaint with the dates etc. I even took a photo of the pothole and the wheel, but never heard anything back. I appreciate if this is an unadopted road that they aren't obliged to fix it, but a simple response to my letter would have been nice. As usual, the little people don't matter - we just pay their wages.

Jackie, Liverpool 18
The Sefton Park road is ridiculous - even swerving to avoid large potholes simply means nose-diving into another. It is both dangerous and costly on tyres & suspension. We don't need the road bringing to "adoptable standard" to the tune of £3-4 million - we merely require an urgent RESURFACING!!!

Bryan
I drive through this road every day, there is no other option to get into town, due to road works on Park Road, so this bottlenecks traffic through the park, or onto Otterspool, i've just had my suspension fixed for the 2nd time in 18 months, thanks partially to the craters on the ' road '.

Michael Hill
Yes, the road round Sefton Park is a disgrace. What is the point in investing millions in the Park if the road lets down the whole scheme?

Julie Knowles
My Husband and I were diving down Mather Avenue two days ago into Allerton. We found the condition of the roads and the effect it had on our car simmilar to the of driving down some dirt track somewhere in the country. We live on the outskirts of Liverpool and have not used this route recently however, concidering this wonderfull city of ours is The Capital of Cutlure 2008 I wonder what our tourists will think entering our city. (bit of a bumpy ride I think)

Paul Chand
Liverpool has a reputation of having one of the worst maintained roads in the country. How come other cities are able to spend money to repair major routes round their busiest?

Brian
Every road in Speke that has speedbumps, every single one of them has been fitted incorectly they are uneven and damage your car!

Mike
Try Belmont Drive Liverpool 6

Philip Lowe
There's lots of patches and new holes appearing in Kirklake Road,Formby, at the bottom end. As fast as they mend them another pot hole appears. It's not so bad if you keep to the 30mph limit but how many do!!

sammy
i ride my bike around sefton park and it is really dangerous when you hit a pot hole. you struggle to stay on!

loutysonsmith
I'm a regular cyclist so bear the brunt of the bad quality of the roads in Liverpool. Only this morning I was riding round Sefton Park and narrowly missed skidding into an oncoming car because of a huge hole in the road. Couple that with the facts that cyclists are not well catered for in the city anyway and some drivers can be very inconsiderate - and you could say it's a nightmare!! However, it won't stop me getting out and about on my bike.

Nick Farina
More road works, has Liverpool not got enough road works, Edge lane drive & Prescott Road, Strand, Vauxhall.......... The list goes on. Liverpool Council sort your self out, how can any one drive around liverpool, its the culture of road works !!!!!!

Karl Shields
Well they should stop talking about it and go and fill the holes in, a car must be getting damaged every day on that road, Dock road north bound is bad and walton road and rice lane are not in good shape either

Dave
Surely the dock road must count as the worst road. if it isn't pot holes you have to avoid it's sticking up old rail lines that zig zag across the street

Paul Burnell
The Sefton Park road cost me a fortune in damaged tyres
