Rakhee enters from outside. Walks up to the desk.

RAKHEE: Um, hi. I’m supposed to be meeting –

RENEE: (off-screen) Rakhee! So glad you made it!

Renee hurries over, hugs her friend, enthusiastic.

RAKHEE: I have to warn you. If you air-kiss me, I may have to kill you.

RENEE: Come again?

RAKHEE: Well, you know…

Renee looks at her blankly.

RAKHEE: I mean, last week you were all but signing up for a gap-year working with underprivileged kids in San Salvador, and now suddenly you’re Davina McCall…

RENEE: Got better hair than Davina McCall…

RAKHEE: (serious) Renee… Please tell me you’re joking…

RENEE: (cracks up laughing) You know I’m joking! It’s just… This is so great! Come on, even you must think it’s pretty cool. Have you heard the show? They’re – I mean, we’re doing a piece on the grandmother of one of the victims…

RAKHEE: One of the victims? Another fire story? Aren’t they bored of that yet?

RENEE: Andy says it’s a great opportunity for the station to show what it’s capable of.

RAKHEE: I thought Wavelength was a community service, not a tabloid.

RENEE: You really know how to bring things down, don’t you?

RAKHEE: I’m sorry. (leans forward, concerned) I just don’t want to see you…

RENEE: What?

RAKHEE: Just watch your back in here, that’s all.

Andy appears from upstairs, sticking his head through the door.

ANDY: Renee, darling, we need to talk. Ayesha’s going to resequence the opening segment. On air in ten, let’s get to it!

Andy closes the door and disappears again. Rakhee looks at Renee, mouths the word ‘darling’ with exaggerated horror.

RENEE: (apologetic) He’s OK when you get to know him. Really.

RAKHEE: I’ll reserve judgement.

Renee fidgets, obviously wanting to get away without being rude. Rakhee grins.

RAKHEE: Go on, you’ve got work to do. It’s not like local culture’s going to dumb down all by itself, is it?

RENEE: (grins back) See you Friday night?

RAKHEE: Sure. Have fun.

Renee’s off, following Andy out of the Open Centre. Rakhee, alone now, sits back.

RAKHEE: (to herself) So much for a coffee…

SAM: (off-screen) I’m buying… If you’ve not got be anywhere right now?

Rakhee turns to see Sam behind her.

Rakhee is seated at the table. Sam joins her with a couple of coffees.

RAKHEE: So what’s this all about then? Am I your millionth listener?

SAM: Don’t get you.

RAKHEE: (ironic) Or do you just select random visitors and make them coffee? Some kind of particularly labour-intensive community outreach scheme?

SAM: I heard you talking. To Renee.

RAKHEE: And?

SAM: Community issues, real people. I liked what you said. Wondered if you had any ideas, something more specific?

RAKHEE: If I had, why would I tell you? So you could get one over on my friend?

SAM: You’re worried about Renee, aren’t you?

RAKHEE: I don’t want to see her used, that’s all. I know what the media’s like.

SAM: (laughs) Have you heard the show, love? We’re not exactly Heat magazine.

RAKHEE: Seems to me Renee’s valuable because she was at the Bull that night. When the fire becomes old news, what’s she going to be worth?

SAM: Say I make you a deal?

RAKHEE: I don’t understand.

SAM: You point me at a few good stories. Just ideas, I’ll do the rest. Assuming they pan out, I’ll keep an eye out for your friend’s best interests, make sure no one’s out to exploit her.

Rakhee frowns, considering. Rocco enters.

SAM: (to Rakhee) Well?

RAKHEE: (to Rocco) What are you doing here?

ROCCO: Could say the same about you, Rakhee. The bloke on the desk said my sister was up here.

SAM: She’s finishing up in the studio, she’ll be right out. (to Rakhee) Do we have a deal?

ROCCO: Oh, girls making deals! Big stuff! Everything sorted, is it? Have we avoided the traumatic crisis of you both turning up in the same shoes tomorrow?

SAM: Actually, we’re both trying to look out for your sister. (to Rakhee) Aren’t we?

RAKHEE: (sighs, a last moment of hesitation) OK, it’s a deal.

ROCCO: Looking out for Renee? Like she needs anyone to mind her. She always lands on her feet. Born lucky that one!

RAKHEE: (to Sam) So… what do you need?
