Hi Georgie.

Georgie
Hi Phil. How are you?

Phil
I'm good, I'm good. I wanted to ask if you've been to any famous places or landmarks in London recently.

Georgie
It's funny you should ask, because I did. A few days ago, I went to the Royal Albert Hall, which is a famous concert hall in London.

Phil
OK. So, Georgie, today we're talking about landmarks – British landmarks. Now, those are famous buildings like the Royal Albert Hall or like... like Big Ben in London. That's a really famous landmark that everyone knows.

Georgie
Yeah, that's a famous clock tower, but before we start talking about landmarks, I need to remind people that they can download a free worksheet to test the vocabulary they learn in this programme, at bbclearningenglish.com.

Phil
OK. So, Georgie, you just said you'd been to the Royal Albert Hall, which is a famous concert hall in London. Why did you go there?

Georgie
I went to a classical music concert, but this was not the first time I've been to the Royal Albert Hall.

Phil
No?

Georgie
No, I actually performed there with my choir last year. It was... it was amazing.

Phil
Oh wow!

Georgie
Phil, have you visited any famous landmarks in London?

Phil
Yeah, I think... I think I've probably visited most of the famous ones. I've been on the London Eye. That's the big wheel. I've been to Tower Bridge lots of times. I've been in the Houses of Parliament. That's right by Big Ben, where the government is.

Georgie
Phil, why have you been in the Houses of Parliament?

Phil
It was just something for work, so it wasn't that interesting, but it's good to see the building. You see it from outside all the time, and it's kind of interesting to see it from the inside. It's really... it's a very beautiful building as well, I think.

Georgie
Yeah, it is. So, you've been to a lot of landmarks in London. Do you have a favourite one?

Phil
My favourite one is actually the river. I love going up and down the river on a boat.

Georgie
Yeah, I really like the river too. My favourite landmark in London is the Tower of London. I went with my dad. It's a very, very old building. I think in history a lot of people died there, so it has a kind of spooky... a spooky feeling there. But it's quite a large area you can walk around and, yeah, it all just feels really old and quite special.

Phil
OK. So, we've been talking about London, but what about the rest of Britain, Georgie? What's your favourite landmark in the rest of Britain?

Georgie
Ooh, I can't wait to talk about this! One of my favourite places in the UK is Edinburgh, which is the capital of Scotland. And in the city, they have – in the middle of the city, they have a big black rock, like a hill. And on the top, there is the castle, Edinburgh Castle, and it's so beautiful. I used to live there when I was at university and every time I walked past it, I was... I felt like a tourist every day. I was always taking photos of it because it looks unreal. It doesn't look... It looks like it's from a storybook. It's magical, I love it.

Phil
Yeah, I love Edinburgh. I went there one year for New Year and it was... It's amazing. You can feel the history. There're so many old buildings and it's... yeah, it's very dramatic.

Georgie
I did a guided tour there actually once. It was around Halloween, so it was a kind of spooky-themed guided tour. They took us to a graveyard and they told us stories about witches, and that was really exciting. I like guided tours.

Phil
Oh yeah, that sounds exciting.

Georgie
So, Phil, do you enjoy sightseeing? So, when you see lots of different landmarks in a city or a country.

Phil
I do, yes. I think usually when you go sightseeing you see lots of old buildings, usually. And they often give you an idea of how people used to live, how people lived in the past, and I find that really interesting. So yes, if I visit a new city, I almost always go sightseeing at some point.

Georgie
Yeah, I really like sightseeing as well. You can see lots of a city, or it's the best way to see a place, I think, when you visit somewhere new. It can be quite exhausting though, can't it? Especially if you're walking all over the city to see all of these different landmarks. So, Phil, my favourite UK landmark is Edinburgh Castle. Do you have a favourite?

Phil
Yes. I think it's got to be Stonehenge, just because it is so old. It's thousands of years old. I don't think I've seen anything else that's that old.

Georgie
Yeah. So, the Stonehenge is in England and it's a circle or a ring of really big, tall stones. And humans put it up and it's really amazing because it's not fully known how they did it, because the rocks are so heavy. So, if anyone comes to the UK to visit, I would really recommend going to see that.

Phil
So, let's look at some of the words that we talked about today. And the big one was landmark, and those are famous buildings or famous places that people visit, and usually they know what they look like beforehand, often.

Georgie
Yes. For example, the London Eye. We also heard sightseeing, which is when you visit landmarks and famous places in a city or country.

Phil
Yes. And one of the ways that you can do sightseeing is you can go on a guided tour, and that's when someone, a guide, leads you around different places and they tell you about the history of all those places. So, Georgie, we're out of time. That's it for Real Easy English for this week. But if you like landmarks, make sure you go to our website to check out the London Letter Challenge, where you can see lots of different landmarks and learn easy English.
