Farewell Rog, very well played

After 44 years of reporting the county's sport, BBC Essex's 'Rocket' Roger Buxton has finally hung up his microphone.

Roger began his broadcasting career on the TOC H hospital radio service in 1964, commentating on Southend United's home games.

In 1981 he 'went pro' as one of the original members of the county's first commercial station, Essex Radio.

Roger Buxton

Roger has been with BBC Essex since 2000

He spent 19 years with them, before heading to BBC Essex in 2000 as the early morning sports reader.

For all of those years he has reported on all sports, from football to table tennis, with the same infectious enthusiasm as when he began.

And all of it with that legendary laugh and style.

Speaking on BBC Essex after his final sports bulletin, he said: "It's like leaving school - you're sorry to go, but happy to go, it's very strange.

"I've loved my time here, it's been absolutely terrific. The job has been marvelous and the only thing better than the job is the people I have worked with. They have all been absolutely wonderful. I've been a very very lucky man."

Roger has managed to pick out three highlights that stand out from his illustrious career.

Roger no longer has to wake-up at 4.30am each day

Commentating on a test match in Australia, as part of a listener trip with Essex Radio.

Commentating for American broadcaster Metro Radio in Los Angeles and San Francisco at the 1994 Football World Cup.

Having dinner with Princess Diana as a thank you for his reporting on disability sport in Essex.

Sporting luminaries from around the county were keen to wish Roger well, including former Essex and England cricket captain, Graham Gooch.

He said: "I've sat down and listened to many of his stories down the years and he helped me in my early days as an after dinner speaker.

"Good luck on your retirement Roger and keep churning out those stories."
