Roger's BIG questions:What was your first radio memory?Listening to Brian Reece as PC 49 in the early 50's. How did you first get into radio?I wanted to be a football commentator and knew there was a TOC H commentary service to the local hospitals from Southend United's Roots Hall. I got a portable tape recorder for my 16th birthday. For the next three years I stood at the back of the South Terrace doing commentaries to myself. Each week I would take the tape to Bert Heigho in the Toc H Broadcast box. After three years, when I was 19, one of their team had a stroke and my persistence made me the obvious replacement. For the next 17 years I did all the home commentaries to the hospital's from Roots Hall until I turned pro with Essex Radio in 1981. What is your favourite song ever?"I want to be happy" from the musical 'No, No Nanette'. What one thing makes Essex so special? What makes Essex special for me is its great variety in almost anything you can think of, from sport to scenery to food to clubs and organisations.
