Sex Pistols: Were YOU there?

"I swear I was there..!"

Did you get to see the Beatles when they played Bradford in 1963? Did you dare to see the Sex Pistols' historic gig in Huddersfield on Christmas Day 1977? Did you catch rock hero Jimi Hendrix play Ilkley in 1967? Share your memories with Memoryshare!

West Yorkshire's rock fans have always had it good - as you can see from the big names who've played here over the years. And if you've ever seen some of those big names in action - or even if you've seen a completely unkown band in a tiny venue in the middle of nowhere who completely blew you away - then this is your chance to say "I swear I was there!"

Some of the big gigs you MIGHT have been at include:

David Bowie featured in tonight's pot luck list

David Bowie: Were YOU there?

* The Beatles at Bradford's Odeon (then the Gaumont) in 1963
* The Sex Pistols at Ivanhoe's in Huddersfield on Christmas Day 1977 - their final UK gig for about two decades!
* David Bowie - at the height of Ziggy Stardust mania - at Bradford's St George's Hall in 1973
* Buzzcocks and Joy Division at St George's Hall in Bradford in 1979

...and many more!

We've previously heard from just some of you who WERE lucky enough to 'be there'!:

* Peter Crowther was at the Troutbeck Hotel in Ilkley and managed to catch Jimi Hendrix on the cusp of Making It Big: "There must have been 300 to 400 fans in a small dance hall and all I could see was the very top of Hendrix's head. By this time they may well have played something but I had not heard anything recognisable so congratulating myself on at least being there and ready for a great night they hit an opening chord and...Sorry folks the police are closing this event down, everyone out! I certainly do not remember a riot but hundreds of disappointed fans very not happy. You can use your imagination as to how they left but I will forever remember being at a Hendrix's gig, hearing him play but what it was I will never know. Happy Times!"

* ...and Nadia was there too: "We remember being evacuated outside because there was some smoke and standing with Jimi and the rest of the band. When Jimi was playing on stage we remember him playing his guitar at the back of his head and then with his teeth, we had never seen anything like that before. We do not remember any riots breaking out (with less than 60 people it would be hard to imagine). I wish now that I should have got his autograph or something!!!"

Jimi Hendrix

Hendrix: Were YOU there?

* Gary Horsman was at Ivanhoe's in Huddersfield to see punk legends the Sex Pistols in the act: "It was a very vibrant, perfect occasion. Not at all threatening! The sound and lighting were perfect, with the Pistols playing their well honed vaudeville/music hall/ Punk/pop sound.I remember the most obvious, genuine punk throwing talcum powder everywhere! No trouble at all!"

* ...and Mick W was there too: "Yes. I was there. Probably the best gig of my life - and I've been to a fair few. I was at the evening show. I only got the ticket because a friend's mother wouldn't let him go - it being Xmas day and all - so I gave him a Genesis Live album for his ticket. Pretty good trade methinks!"
