Well January was rubbish wasn’t it? We had lost so many already but when the news came in of Terry’s death yesterday morning, it felt like a real kick in the stomach. I had no idea that was Terry was poorly. I don’t think anyone here knew much until last Thursday so we are all reeling.
So first things first. Our condolences to Helen and the family who Terry always put first. Hopefully there will be some small consolation in the extraordinary outpouring of grief that we have seen across the radio, TV, papers and social media. I got a request to go on the news channel around 9.30 and so rapidly tried to summon a few words of coherence whilst listening to Mark Goodier play some of Terry’s songs and read out listeners comments. And it sort of boiled down to this (you might have heard this before)…He was the ultimate friend behind the mic. All good radio boils down to this. He always had the right phrase, the right tone. The word genius is bandied around all too easily but if ever there was a radio genius, Terry was it.
And now Chris is playing all the great clips of Terry and we can marvel all over again. And learn too-I had no idea that he never saw the Janet and John script until he was reading it out! Bold move! No wonder he was in hysterics all the time.
So here’s the thing. 5 minutes listening to Terry and the world was a better place; you would smile and laugh and things seemed ok. So oldies please THAT MAKE YOU SMILE AND FEEL BETTER. That’ll be good.
Oh and the shows goes on of course. The Book Club has a good one for you. Don’t miss Peter May talking about his thriller set on the Isle of Harris called Coffin Road. There’s a chapter online and it is excellent.
5pm then
