Ouch weblog: individual blog entry

8 Jul 05, 12:00 AM - Euthanasia in the Netherlands

Posted by Crippled Monkey

Child euthanasia in the Netherlands has been much in the news this year, with doctors having reported 22 "mercy killings" of "terminally ill babies" since 1997 (edit: although, as the BBC News report goes on to clarify, the cases actually involved babies with "extreme spina bifida"). Now, in a new commentary currently featured on the website of Not Dead Yet - a US disability rights group that organises opposition to legalised euthanasia,
assisted suicide and other types of medical killing - research analyst Stephen Drake says not only that euthanasia is out of control in the Netherlands, but that an increasing number of American medical professionals would similarly "embrace legalization of infanticide based on disability".

Check out the article and let us know what you think.

Crippled Monkey, thanks for posting a link and description of my article. I have to make a correction, though. Your own intro describes the infants killed in the Netherlands as "terminally ill." In fact, all the "mercy killings" described in the latest article were of infants with spina bifida - which is NOT a terminal illness (unless, of course, someone decides it will *be* terminal by killing the kid.). Cheers.

Spina Bifida now causes constant pain and is grounds for euthanasia? Scuse me while I go WHAT THE F***?!!? OK, maybe they mean anencephaly, which is - well, really quite serious. But even so there's nothing to suggest that it's painful for the baby, although it is seriously life-limiting. FREE OUR LITTLEST PEOPLE!
