Continuing the two short walks theme. ![]() Fens Pools I'm taking the 248 bus route on its return to Stourbridge alight at Russell's Hall Hospital. Walk in the direction of the A&E Department then take the path to the main road. Turn right toward Kingswinford then turn right at St. Marks' Church, Pensnett. Barrow HillBarrow Hill was declared a local nature reserve in 2005, with its beautiful mix of ancient wood land and pools. It's most attractive varied green space, known as the Dudley Volcano, formed 315 million years ago. After a short walk, take the steps to the top of the incline, an elevation of 300ft. On the summit it has a large cross commissioned by St Marks’ Church, which is, unusually, fabricated from galvanised steel. ![]() Fens Pools From this vantage point there are excellent views across South Staffordshire and Shropshire, with the hills including the Wrekin and Brown Clee and Clent Hills in the other direction. Return down the steps, turn left to follow the path towards Barrow Hill Coppice and beyond. On the far north side there are signs of the Industrial Revolution with the old pump house chimney still standing and beyond that we see more modern industrial signs including factories, warehouses and an oil storage depot. Barrow Hill is a most rewarding walk and, I have to admit, this was my first visit despite having passed thousands of times without visiting. The weather made it a great day for taking snaps adding to the enjoyment. Fens PoolsTo gain access you need to cross the main road. I suggest retracing your steps to the pedestrian crossing by the hospital. On crossing the road the entrance to Fens Pools is adjacent. ![]() Fens Pools Fens Pools are the largest area of open water in the Dudley Metropolitan Borough. These pools were originally built as feeder reservoirs for the Stourbridge Canals. This is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the outstanding variety of wildlife to be found. With flowers such as the Southern Marsh Orchid, as well as many bird species including the Great Crested Grebe, this makes is a great area for bird watchers. There are also some superb views across Shropshire and Worcestershire. Both walks are available as leaflets by Dudley Planning and Leisure and are available from main libraries in the local area. My plan is to complete the Fens Pool walk on to Buck Pool, the Nine Locks and Wordsley. Until next time enjoy the walks.last updated: 21/07/2009 at 11:14 SEE ALSOYou are in: Black Country > Features > More features > Short Walks 5: Barrow Hill and Fens Pools |
