Shapes with 4 sides
[THEME MUSIC]
[SCHOOL BELL RINGS]
Hello, I’m Mr Firth and together we’re going to learn about shapes that have four sides.
There are lots of shapes around us.
Today we’re going to focus on shapes with four sides.
Two-dimensional shapes can’t be picked up.
They can be drawn, or found in books.
They can also be seen on a screen. Like this.
Here are some shapes. Do you recognise any of them?
Two-dimensional shapes have two different kinds of sides.
They have straight sides, like this… or curved lines like this.
Can you draw some straight lines in the air just like me?
Can you draw some curved lines in the air too? That’s great.
Our shapes today have four sides and there made up of four straight lines.
Can you draw some four-sided shapes in the air?
Like me?
Let’s take a look at some four-sided shapes.
Watch what happens when these four sides join together.
What do you notice about this shape?
Yes, it has four straight sides.
Let’s count them One, two, three, four.
What else do you notice? Can you see that all the sides are the same length? This four-sided shape is called a square.
I’m going to show you some shapes now.
Can you find the square? Remember, a square has four straight sides and all the sides are the same length. Can you find it?
Here it is.
Did you notice there was another four-sided shape?
Let’s look at this shape more closely.
This is a square. We know it has four straight sides and all the sides are the same length.
But this shape is a different shape.
What’s the same and what’s different about this shape?
Our new shape has four sides.
Count with me. One, two, three, four.
Have you noticed something else? The sides are different lengths.
There are two short sides and two longer sides. This shape is called a rectangle.
How many squares can you see? I’m going to count all the squares.
Ready? One, two, three, four.
Did you spot them up?
I wonder whether you can spot all the rectangles.
Remember, rectangles have four sides but all the sides aren’t equal.
Rectangles have two short sides and two longer sides.
Here we go. How many rectangles can you see?
I’m going to count all the rectangles.
One, two, three, four.
Did you spot them all? Well done.
Shapes are all around us. See if you can spot some squares and rectangles today.
Wherever you are.
Description
Identify different four-sided shapes and look at how the length of the sides determines which type of shape it is.
