Exam advice

Choosing the topic

Teachers and lecturers can guide you on topics and the type of question which would suit. Also think about using an evaluation or assessment type question from a Higher History past paper.

Think about using a question stem such as

  • ‘To what extent …’ or
  • ‘How important …’ or
  • ‘How successful ...’

Research and using the Resource sheet effectively

While there are no restrictions on the resources you can use for research, it’s a good idea to use History ‘textbooks’.

The purpose is to reference a historian’s opinion NOT to quote factual evidence.

During the research it is important to note:

  • the author
  • textbook
  • quote

This can come from a book or from online resources.

This information must be recorded on the Resource Sheet you submit to the SQA. This is the most common mistake made by candidates!

Good practice is to use the Resource Sheet as an essay plan:-

  • List the factors
  • Summarise your knowledge points
  • Note your four references - Author – Text – Full Quote.

Use the Resource Sheet in your Assignment write-up.
